William McKinley(January 29, 1843 – September 14, 1901) was the25thPresident of the United States, serving from March 4, 1897, untilhis assassinationin September 1901, six months into his second term. McKinley led the nation to victory in theSpanish–American War, raisedprotective tariffsto promote American industry, and maintained the nation on thegold standardin a rejection ofinflationary proposals.

McKinley was the last president to have served in theAmerican Civil War, beginning as a private in theUnion Armyand ending as abrevetmajor. After the war, he settled inCanton, Ohio, where he practiced law and marriedIda Saxton. In 1876, he was elected toCongress, where he became theRepublican Party\'s expert on theprotective tariff, which he promised would bring prosperity. His 1890McKinley Tariffwas highly controversial; which together with aDemocraticredistricting aimed atgerrymanderinghim out of office, led to his defeat in the Democratic landslide of 1890. He was elected Ohio\'s governor in 1891 and 1893, steering a moderate course between capital and labor interests. With the aid of his close adviserMark Hanna, hesecured the Republican nomination for president in 1896, amid a deep economic depression. He defeated his Democratic rival,William Jennings Bryan, after afront-porch campaignin which he advocated \"sound money\" (the gold standard unless altered by international agreement) and promised that high tariffs would restore prosperity.

Rapid economic growth marked McKinley\'s presidency. He promoted the 1897Dingley Tariffto protect manufacturers and factory workers from foreign competition, and in 1900, he secured the passage of theGold Standard Act. McKinley hoped to persuadeSpainto grant independence to rebelliousCubawithout conflict, but when negotiation failed, he led the nation in the Spanish–American War of 1898; the U.S. victory was quick and decisive. As part ofthe peace settlement, Spain turned over to the United States its main overseas colonies ofPuerto Rico,Guam, and thePhilippines; Cuba was promised independence, but at that time remained under the control of the U.S. Army. The United Statesannexedthe independentRepublic of Hawaiiin 1898 and it became a U.S.territory.

Historians regard McKinley\'s 1896 victory as arealigning election, in whichthe political stalemateof the post-Civil War era gave way to the Republican-dominatedFourth Party System, which began with theProgressive Era. McKinley defeated Bryan again in the1900 presidential election, in a campaign focused onimperialism, protectionism, and free silver. However, his legacy was quickly cut short whenhe was shoton September 6, 1901 byLeon Czolgosz, a second-generationPolish-American withanarchistleanings; McKinley died eight days later, and was succeeded by Vice PresidentTheodore Roosevelt. As an innovator of Americaninterventionismand pro-business sentiment, McKinley\'s presidency isgenerally considered above average, though his universally positive public perception was soon overshadowed by Roosevelt.

Born a sickly child with debilitatingasthma, Roosevelt successfully overcame his health problems by embracing a strenuous lifestyle. He integrated his exuberant personality, vast range of interests, and world-famous achievements into a \"cowboy\" persona defined by robustmasculinity. Home-schooled, he became a lifelong naturalist before attendingHarvard College. His first of many books,The Naval War of 1812(1882), established his reputation as both a learned historian and as a popular writer. Upon entering politics, he became the leader of the reform faction of Republicans in New York\'s state legislature. Following the deaths of his wife and mother, he took time to grieve by escaping to the wilderness of theAmerican Westand operating a cattle ranch in the Dakotas for a time, before returning East to run unsuccessfully for Mayor of New York City in 1886. He served asAssistant Secretary of the Navyunder William McKinley, resigning after one year to serve with theRough Riders, where he gained national fame for courage during theSpanish–American War. Returning a war hero, he was elected governor of New York in 1898. The state party leadership distrusted him, so they took the lead in moving him to the prestigious, but considered by them powerless, position of running for vice president as McKinley\'s running mate in theelection of 1900. Roosevelt campaigned vigorously across the country, helping McKinley win re-election by a landslide on a platform of peace, prosperity, and conservatism.

Following theassassination of President McKinleyin September 1901, Roosevelt, at age 42, succeeded to the office, becoming the youngest United States President in history. Leading his party and country into theProgressive Era, he championed his \"Square Deal\" domestic policies, promising the average citizen fairness, breaking of trusts, regulation of railroads, and pure food and drugs. Making conservation a top priority, he established myriad newnational parks, forests, and monumentsintended to preserve the nation\'s natural resources. In foreign policy, hefocused on Central America, where he began construction of thePanama Canal. He greatly expanded the United States Navy, and sent theGreat White Fleeton a world tour to project the United States\' naval power around the globe. His successful efforts to end theRusso-Japanese Warwon him the 1906Nobel Peace Prize.

Elected in 1904to a full term, Roosevelt continued to promote progressive policies, but many of his efforts and much of his legislative agenda were eventually blocked in Congress. Roosevelt successfully groomed his close friend,William Howard Taft, to succeed him in the presidency. After leaving office, Roosevelt went on safari in Africa and toured Europe. Returning to the USA, he became frustrated with Taft\'s approach as his successor. He tried but failed to winthe presidential nominationin 1912. Roosevelt founded his own party, theProgressive, so-called \"Bull Moose\" Party, and called for wide-ranging progressive reforms. The split among Republicans enabled the Democrats to win both the White House and a majority in the Congress in1912. The Democrats in the South had also gained power by havingdisenfranchised most blacks(and Republicans) from the political system from 1890 to 1908, fatally weakening the Republican Party across the region, and creating aSolid Southdominated by their party alone. Republicans aligned with Taft nationally would control the Republican Party for decades.

Frustrated at home, Roosevelt led atwo-year expedition in the Amazon Basin, nearly dying of tropical disease. DuringWorld War I, he opposedPresident Woodrow Wilsonfor keeping the U.S. out of the war against Germany, and offered his military services, which were never summoned. Although planning to run again for president in 1920, Roosevelt suffered deteriorating health and died in early 1919. Roosevelt has consistently been ranked by scholars as one of thegreatest U.S. presidents.[2]His face was carved intoMount Rushmorealongside those ofGeorge Washington,Thomas Jefferson, andAbraham style=\"WHITE-SPACE: normal; WORD-SPACING: 0px; TEXT-TRANSFORM: none; COLOR: rgb(0,0,0); FONT: medium \'Times New Roman\'; LETTER-SPACING: normal; TEXT-INDENT: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; font-stretch: normal\">
