1902 Underwood Stereoview, Kalikwan, Alaska Native American Village with Totem Poles. This antique stereoview is in good condition with one scratch on the right side. The view is marked: Underwood & Underwood, Publishers, New York, London, Toronto, Canada, Ottawa, Kansas, Works & Studios, Sun Sculpture trade mark, Arlington, NJ, Westwood, NJ, Washington, D.C. Underneath the photos it says: (18) 4709, Indian Village of Klinkwan (wrong spelling)-modern natives & Totem Poles of old Hydahs, Alaska, copyright 1902 Underwood & Underwood. The image is fabulous, a woman teacher sitting on the porch of a schoolhouse, with 9 children of different ages wandering around. To the right is a native man who\'s smoking a pipe in front of a huge beautifullycarved totem pole. There\'s 5 more totem poles behind him, propped up with poles in front of the other dwellings. There\'s a big eagle on the front of the schoolhouse. The back of the stereoview tells about the Alaskan Native American\'s home high above Sitka on one of the routes to the Klondike by the Chilkat Pass. It is politically incorrect, stating that the advent of traders, missionaries& miners has transformed Indian modes of life into a curious mongrel mix of savagery & civilization. It mentions that the grotesque totem poles (?) stand for a peculiar Alaskan religious heraldry. No matter what the text says, this stereoview is historically important for any Northwest coast image collector. And it\'s a must-have for any collector of those grotesque totem poles!
