This is a particularly enjoyable set of Dickens as each volume (or volume one of each pair) contains an introductory and illustrated Editorial Notes which places the story into a context of social history and geography - mostly London-based, hence the edition title. The London Edition of the Works of Charles Dickens was published byThe Caxton Publishing Company, London WC - no date but generally accepted to be 1910.
The 28 volumes have identical green cloth bindings with pale green lettering and decoration - which includes thearmorial of the City of London, the words The London Edition at the top, at the bottomThe Caxton Publishing Companyand a CD (Charles Dickens)monogram in the centre - the spinehas gilt lettering anddecoration which repeats theCDmonogram. Each book measure approximately 21x14cms and contains around 300 pages.
These book are very well illustrated throughout with colour and black & white plates plus B&W illustrations in the text by George Cruikshank, Hablot K Browne (Phiz), Leech, Sibson, etc.

Condition:This set of secondhand books is in very good condition with some shelf-wear and ageing. There is shelf-wear to the cover boards with bruising to the corners. Some of the volumes have a little foxing to a few pages at the start and end of the book and the outer edges of the page blocks. The are two plates which are loose but not missing. A few of the books have the original owner\'s name written small at the front. Published without dust jackets.
