Thisrare antique doll, named “Baby Bi-Face”, was created by IDEAL, in 1916,and it was an early version of the later two-faced “Snoozie Smiles”doll. From the February 1916 edition of Playthingsmagazine, “MorrisMichtom, the ‘Poo Bah’ of the IDEAL Novelty and Toy Co., reportsan unprecedented demand for his famous line of American dolls…..thereis the ‘Baby Bi-Face,’ a doll with a reversible head, one sideshowing a laughing youngster and the other a kid that is crying likea thunderstorm”. This old baby doll will be appreciated by thosewho prefer rugged charm over perfection as it has several conditionissues. Its head and forearms, which are made of “composition”(sawdust and glue), have wornsurface paint, cracks, crazing and chipping, its stuffed clothbody--part of which appears to be filled with excelsior--has afew small tears, unravelled seams and grime with a few rust pots fromthe voice boxes, which are not working. Even with it flaws,this 100-year old “BabyBi-Face” doll is an IDEAL treasure for the collector.
