I was told that this remarkable item dates to 1917, and was used on an American military motor vehicle in France during the First World War, as part of American Expeditionary Forces (AEF). This topper is all original with no restoration of any kind.

The letters are not separate and added on - remarkably, this topper was instead expertly cut out of a single slab of aluminum or pot metal, which is a full eighth of an inch thick.

The bottom mounting area was painted, while the letters remained natural metal. Two mounting holes are in this lower section, and one of them still holds an ancient bolt. It appears as if the \"R\" has suffered a blow from above. Please see the close-up photo for detail.
