Sinkingof the Lusitania Medal, 1918. CGI 3:21A; GabrielGS-29. 54mm. Bronze. René Baudichon, Sc. (1878-1963). Struck by the Monnie deParis (Paris Mint). About Uncirculated with a few minor marks/spots, high-pointrub and a medium brown patina. Edge incused BRONZE with Cornucopia hallmark. Obverse: a powerful depiction of theStatue of Liberty, a sword replacing her torch, rising from the very ocean intowhich the Lusitania had sunk. Legend around: LVRTIX·AMERICA·JVRIS (America,Avenger of the Law) 1917 U·S·A 1918. Signed at the right: R·Baudichon.Reverse: legend around: LUSITANIAMAY·7·1915 is incused on a raised border, the width of which is variedto created a field similar to a round shield or the cross-section of the hullof the ship. A horizontal bar creates a thin chief at top in which a young girlis drowning. Below, the Lusitania is about to sink; an overturned lifeboat is seenin the foreground. Signed with monogram above at right: RB.

In thebackground, the doomed passenger linerLusitaniasinks amidst itsdrowning passengers. The May 1915 sinking by a German U-Boat caused 1,200civilian deaths and sparked widespread outrage.
