1920 Masonic Shrine Pendant on 12K GF 1/8” Cable Chain, Engraved
Previously owned.
This piece is in great shape for its age.
It is engraved with the date 1920 so it has worn well for being almost 100 years old.
There does appear to be a stone or something missing on the front side of the pendant at the top.
The pendant is in the shape of what is referred to as Shrine Jewelry.
The Ancient Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, commonly called Shriners was established in 1870 in the US by Dr. Walter M. Fleming, M.D. and William J. Florence.
Being a Master Mason is usually a requirement of membership within a Shrine.
The symbols on the pendant indicate that the Master Mason level was completed by the previous owner.
The symbols on the front of the pendant are a black cross with a red cross inside a crown and the motto “In hoc signo vinces” written on each point of the cross. This Latin phrase translates into “By this standard, conquer.”
These symbols are in a combination of gold and enamel.
There is also what appears to be the letter “M” at the top in black and white stripes with the head of a snake at the top.
Beneath the head is an open area where something may be missing.
The backside of the pendant features the symbol of the double-headed eagle.
This indicates the Mason reached the Scottish Rite.
There is also an engraving at the top that says “M.K. French, Memphis, Com dv No. 4., 1920”.
The gold on the pendant tested positive 14K with Puritest solution but there is no stamp so it may only be 14K plate.
The balance of the pendant is enamel and possible shell or acrylic.
The chain the pendant hangs from is stamped 12K GF and tested positive with Puritest solution.
The chain is 1/8” cable with large hinged O-ring for the pendant.
Chain length is 16” with extension to 19”.
Comes in red jewelry box 3 ¾” x 3 1/8’.
