Description

An original late 1920s or early 1930s elegant flapper wedding dress from France in ivory tissue silk with an art deco floral silk lace overskirt and wide collar, and floating ivory silk chiffon panels on the skirt and a chiffon yoke with dolman sleeves. This original beauty was collected in Paris, France more than 25 years ago and has been safely stored ever since. This gorgeous confection is made of the finest tissue silk that moves with the mere hint of a breeze. The bodice has chiffon shoulders and short sleeves, and then a wide silk lace collar with an art deco floral pattern. The drop waist, located above the natural hips, has a wide gathered tissue silk cummerbund. The gathered skirt is attached below, and is straight to lower calf length. There is a silk lace overskirt that matches the wide collar, and then the dress has two long chiffon panels on each side. Both the lace and the chiffon panels are about a foot shorter than the tissue silk skirt underneath. Above each chiffon panel are three tissue silk roses. There is a tissue silk lining in the bodice, and the dress fastens with a series of hooks and eyes in two layers on the left side of the bodice and down through the cummerbund to the top of the skirt. The dress is beautifully elegant and feminine in both design and fabric. The color is ivory with a creamy patina that is the nature of antique silk - Icall it antique white. The dress is very well made and beautifully finished with both machine and hand stitching, and I think it could have been a flapper wedding dress. The measurements (approximate) are:

bust (pit to pit) 36\"
natural waist 34\"
drop waist 32\" (sits above the hips)
hips 38\"
shoulder to shoulder across the back 15.5\"
shoulder to hem 51\"at the longest
sleeves 5\"

These measurements are roughly equivalent to a US size 6. It would probably also look fine on a slightly smaller size 4 or 5. There is no room for expansion at the drop waist where the cummerbund is located, as this is the most restrictive measurement of the dress and falls above the natural hip. The dress is shown on my size 6 model and fits well, but loose as a flapper dress should fit, with the cummerbund fitting well at the drop waist above the natural hips. There are no condition issues with the dress that I detected. The fabric is strong and shows no sign of deterioration, and there are no tears, repairs, stains, alterations or other defects that I could find. There are notable things that I did NOT find - no shoulder deterioration or hanger damage, no threadbare areas in the fabric, no holes or tears in the silk lace - this beauty is in incredible condition for age. However, this dress is approximately 100 years old and so there may be some minor signs of age related wear. I did find a tiny pea size hole in the back of the right shirt sleeve (shown in one of the photos), and a very few very tiny thread pulls in the silk lace. There may be other loose threads, tiny pulls, or some weak seams because of the age of the garment, but I did not find any. The dress is in amazing condition for age - museum condition really. The dress appears clean and ready to wear, although I have not laundered it (that\'s right - no stains on this antique white dress either!). A dress for any elegant 1920s or 1930s themed event. A most elegant selection for a \"diner en blanc\". A perfect dress for a 1920s or 1930s themed wedding, this dress is light, ephemeral, with an iconic drop waist and floating panel design, and is strong enough to be worn. The tissue silk dress and the silk lace and chiffon floating panels give the dress movement in the slightest breeze - how beautiful for an outdoor summer wedding! Not a dress for the speakeasy, this dress is elegant and feminine, and just right for a summer wedding. Made with top quality materials and construction, and elements of design consistent with any of the large French fashion houses of that time - the drop waist, the cummerbund, the silk rosettes, the lace and chiffon panels. Unfortunately, any designer label that may have been in the dress has been lost over time. Scroll down to see all the pictures, which are part of the description. Please assume that older vintage and antique items may have a little dust and/or a few age spots, unless we have specifically stated that we have recently laundered the item.
