WELCOMETO SALLY’S DIARIES:

Upfor sale today are two handwritten diaries both of which are 5year diaries so the years represented are 1924-1928 and 1929-1933.They belonged to Lona Elizabeth Noble who was born in 1888 in NorwayMaine. Sadly Lona’s parents passed away way too early, her fatherin 1899 and her mother in 1902 so Lona was just 11 years old when herfather passed and 14 when her mother passed. Because of this Lonaends up living with her older brother and his family, at least untilher rather secretive marriage in 1930 as an article states that wasfound pasted to the pages of her diary, and I quote….

“June24th,1930. Telegraphic announcement was received Wednesday morning of themarriage in Hartford, Conn., Tuesday evening, of Miss Lona E. Noble,R.N. formerly of Norway, and George Hatch of Hartford, Conn. This isthe fourth surprise marriage of Norway people this month and as missNoble is a Norway girl and one of the very popular ones, her friendsare much interested. Details of the wedding or the bridegrooms arelacking as she had made a confident of no one as far as can belearned, not even her relatives knowing of her intentions……”

Lonapassed away in 1961.

Ialso found a wonderful biography concerning her father and mostly hisnoteworthy service in the civil war and I quote…..

“FrancisMarion Noble, whose course in life is now to be briefly set forth, was the tenth and youngest child of his parents. When but a striplingof sixteen years, he enlisted in his country’s service, joiningCompany G, Fourteenth Maine Volunteer Infantry, under Captain Cheneyand Colonel Nickerson. He was mustered in at Augusta, Me., when hewent to Ship Island, and then to New Orleans, going from there toBaton Rouge, where they met a body of Confederate troops, undercommand of Colonel Breckinridge, with whom they had a pitched battle,August,1862. In the summer of 1863 he was engaged in the siege ofPort Hudson, La. Crossing the country to Petersburg, Va., theregiment was with Sheridan’s forces in the Shenandoah Valley, wherethey remained three months, taking an active part in variousengagements. While there Mr. Noble received a serious gunshot wound, which necessitated his being taken to the McClellan Hospitalin Philadelphia. Five months later he rejoined his regiment atSavannah, Ga., where he was stationed until the close of the war. Hewas not in any battle after the one at Winchester, where he waswounded. On August 25, 1865, he received his discharge at DarienRidge, Georgia. On being mustered out of service, Mr.Noble returned to his native place, and soon afterward brought hispresent farm, consisting of one hundred and eighty acres, on which hehas faithfully labored……..On September, 1868, Mr. Noble marriedMiss Myra Pike Hall, who was born March 4, 1850, in Norway, daughterof William and Mary F. (Towne) Hall……” (It goes on to talkabout his children).

Thephoto of the young man shown in the scans above is one I found on theweb and is an early photo of Lona’s father. It’s just a copy.

Becausethere are so many entries combined within the pages of these diariesI chose not to read them. Not only are there entries but she’spasted numerous newspaper articles and other pieces of ephemera tothe pages of the second diary; most of which tell of the specialevents including births, marriages and deaths. I scanned as manypages as I could to give you a better idea of the contents. I wouldsay a good deal of her entries have to do with her nursing.

Theearly diary (1924-1928) has a handwritten entry for almost every dayof the year for the first four years but 1928 is only about halffull. The second diary (1929-1933) has most of the days full butthere are some blank days; I would say it’s about ¾ full.

Eachdiary measures about 4” x 5 1/4” and both are in fair to goodshape; cover on one is a bit stained.
