Up for sale is a rare historical monographentitled The Fortunate Island ofMonhegan, by Charles Francis Jenney, printed by Reynolds Printing, NewBedford, Massachusetts in 1927. This 78-page cardboard covered book aboutthis famous Maine island was “FromVolume 31 of the Proceedings of the American Antiquarian Society, WithAdditions.”, and this is the second edition. The contents are heavilyfootnoted on almost every page, and provide great detail about severalprominent families in Monhegan’s history. The appendices section contains moredetailed history, including the Keepersof the Light Station from 1824 to 1922, Assistant Keepers from 1855 to 1922,Keepers of the Fog Signal Station from 1876 to date, Post Office history, andthose who served in the Civil War and World War I. The last page contains a wonderful pull-outtopographical map of the island by George Danforth in 1922, from U.S.Geographical Survey data and original surveys. The map measures about 10 x 12”.

This greatbook measures about 6 ½ x 10”, and is in good condition except for the frontand back covers and spine. They are in rough shape, nearly detached, with sometape-mended tears, some missing paper. Otherwise, the book is all intact, nomissing pages, totally readable.
