This is an exceptional photograph by the early-20th-Century master photographer Edwin TOWNSEND, featuring his most famous model Tony SANSONE, in a dramatically lit, dynamic studio pose. The photograph dates from the 1930s.
This print of Tony Sansone is quite rare and desirable, and deserving of any serious collector\'s archive.

Arthur Lee describes Sansone in the introduction to the book Rhythm, published in 1935, as \"a man finer in form than any Greek statue.... Famous on Atlantic beaches, in New York and Brooklyn gymnasiums, appearing for several seasons in our chief cities as a dancer... he is the thrill and despair of genuine artists.\" Sansone was the most popular model of renowned early male nude physique photographer Edwin Townsend. His life was examined in detail in the 2004 book American Adonis: Tony Sansone, the First Male Physique Icon by John Massey.

At the cusp between \"Strongman\" and \"Beefcake\" photography stands Edwin F. Townsend as the preeminent physique photographer of the 1920s and \'30s. Coming from the world of fashion and theatrical photography, Townsend\'s dreamy grace and light set him apart from his predecessors and paved the way for the new male esthetic that would be celebrated by the likes of Lynes, Urban and Forbes. As David Chapman comments in the introduction to Adonis: The Male Physique Pin-Up 1870 to 1940, \"a classical Greek serenity pervades the work...drawing upon images of a Classical and contemplative Elysium of the soul.\"
Condition
The approximately 7½-by-9½-inch vintage photograph is printed in warm tones on heavy matte stock and is outstanding. It is quintessentially Townsend for its lighting, focus and composition. Quality and clarity are excellent. On the lower-right there is an ethereal light streak, which is apparent in the scan. And while it is obviously not intended, it doesn\'t detract much either.
