Offering a RARE, ORIGINAL 1932 CELLULOID WIND-UP ELEPHANT with a SILK attached to its back reading \"REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTION JUNE 1932.\" This still-functioning toy measures approximately 7.75\" long X 4.25\" tall X 3\" wide. The condition is almost FLAWLESS - see more detailed condition report and photos. The SILK measures 4\" X 2.25\" and is in great condition!

I am not an expert, but I believe this elephant is the same TOY sold as \"Henry On Elephant\" featuring the comic strip character \"Henry.\" That elephant\'s trademark was registered in JAPAN, ENGLAND, USA, and INDIA. I do not have the box this would have come in, but I have observed some of these \"Henry\" toys and the similarities are striking, right down to the black painted toes.My assumption is that some smart marketer added the silks to turn a profit by converting these toys into SOUVENIRS or give-aways to attendees at the REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTION in CHICAGO STADIUM that renominated HERBERT HOOVER for PRESIDENT and CHARLES CURTIS OF KANSAS for VICE-PRESIDENT.This piece has been part of my political collection for 15 years, and I have NEVER SEEN ANOTHER ONE LIKE IT. This would make a great gift, a fine donation to a museum, or a rare addition to your collection.
CONDITION:I can find no cracks, breaks, or repairs on the celluloid surface; paint is bright and strong except for perhaps some minor wear on a couple of the red frills hanging from the celluloid \"blanket\" on the elephant\'s back; winding key is firm and the mechanism still works - the elephant will shake its head from side-to-side, but might need a little \"help\" by touching the head or applying pressure to the key; the silk advertising \"blanket\" is in excellent condition and still firmly attached with what I believe is the original heavy thread; black print on the silk is strong and clear.
