This is an unmatched and unsurpassed BVG 8 NM-MT example of the 1933 Goudey Sport Kings #38 card of one of the greatest golfers of all-time, as well as one the game\'s most respected and admired individuals, Robert Tyre \"Bobby\" Jones Jr.
If one wants to learn of a man in the Pantheon of Sports Legends who also set an extraordinary example of character and integrity, one need look no further than this remarkable gentleman:
  • He chose to compete only as an amateur, retiring at age 28, so that he could devote more time to his family and his law practice.
  • A major survey published in 2009 by Golf Magazine ranks Jones as the third greatest golfer in history, behind only Jack Nicklaus (#1) and Tiger Woods (#2).
  • He is the only golfer ever to win the Grand Slam of Golf, winning all four major championships in the samecalendaryear (1930).
  • During his relatively brief career, he played in 31 Majors, winning 13 of them, and placing in the top 10 in 27 contests!
  • At the U.S. Open in 1925, when brushing the grass near his ball with his club, the ball moved slightly within its deep rough location. Jones penalized himself one stroke for causing this accidental movement of the ball. His playing partner at the time, the great Walter Hagen, and tournament officials tried to dissuade him from taking the self-imposed penalty, but Jones insisted. He went on to lose that major tournament in a playoff after finishing tied for first in regulation. Later, praised by many for his honorable act, Jones stated, \"You might as well praise me for not robbing banks.\"
  • Today, the USGA\'ssportsmanshipaward is named the Bob Jones Award in his honor.
  • He was highly educated and successful outside of the game of golf, having earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Tech, an A.B. in English Literature from Harvard College, and studied law at Emory, passing the Georgia bar exam after only 3 semesters.
  • After retiring he became a highly successful lawyer, wrote books on golfing, founded and helped design Augusta National Golf Club, and co-founded The Masters Tournament.
  • He was married to Mary Rice Malone Jones, whom he met as a freshman in college, for 47 years, until his death in 1971 at the age of 69. The couple had three children.
