Woman\'s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU)1933 National Convention Program plus 13 autographs of prominent women in the prohibition and other feminist movements and the autograph of famous Abraham Lincoln impersonator Lincoln Caswell.The paperback program, about 5 by 8 inches, 24 pages, for the Crusade Anniversary held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, describes events held between June 30 and July 5, 1933, the last year of Prohibition in the United States.This particular copy comes from Mabel M. Farrington, a delegate from New Jersey.In it, she has inserted threesmallsheetsof paper with the autographs and addresses of prominent WCTU members and others who spoke at the convention and a small sheet with Lincoln Caswell\'s autograph.The program is in very good plus condition and the four sheets with autographs are in excellent condition.

The firstsheet of paper, about 4 by 4.25 inches, dated July 2, 1933 in pencil by Mrs. Farrington, contains the autographs of a spectacular group of movers and shakers in the prohibition movement and among the first dominant female leaders in American history.Included are the autographs of the pioneer social worker and feminist Jane Addams (1860-1935), who was the first American woman to win a Nobel Peace Prize in 1931 and was also the founder of Hull House in Chicago.Ms. Addams gave the main address at the Sunday, July 2, afternoon meeting entitled \"Governmental Efforts Toward World Peace.\"Beneath her signature are the signatures of the President, Vice-President and Treasurer of the WCTU, Ella A. Boole, Ida B. Wise Smith, and Margaret C. Munns, respectively.Mrs. Boole (1858-1952) spent her life as a temperance leader and served as the5th President of the National WCTU between 1925 to 1933 at the height of the organization\'s power. Shelater became President of the World WCTU.Mrs. Smith was a prominent promoter of child welfare and research at the University of Iowa before becoming involved with the WCTU.She was Vice-President during the 1932-1933 term and became the6th President of the National WCTU following Mrs. Boole, serving from 1933 to 1944.Mrs. Munns was Treasurer of the WCTU, presented a financial review to the delegates, and on Monday night, July 3, was the principal speaker, giving an address entitled \"Send the Light.\"The last two signatures on this sheet of paper are from Mrs. D. Leigh Colvin (also known as Mamie White Colvin) (1883-1955) who took part in a round table \"Campaigning to Retain the 18th Amendment\" Tuesday afternoon, July 4, and Hardynia K. Norville (1864-1941), the WCTU missionary in South America, who presented an address at the Monday night, July 3, meeting entitled \"Twenty Years in the Twin Continent.\"Mrs. Colvin later became the7th President of the NationalWCTU following Mrs. Smith; she served between 1944 and 1953.After repeal of the 18th Amendment, Mrs. Smith became a leader in the movement to outlaw marijuana.

The secondsheet of paper, 4 by 6 inches, dated July 1933 in pencil by Mrs. Farrington, includes 5 autographs with addresses provided by the signatories.The first is Izora Scott, the WCTU expert on federal legislation from Washington, DC, who gave two reports on legislation at the convention.The second is Helen L. Byrnes, the WCTU National General Secretary of the Young People\'s Bureau, who gave one talk on the youth and led the Young People\'s Chorus at the Convention Dinner.Following the end of Prohibition, she also became a vocal advocate for the prohibition of marijuana.The third is Olla P. Christner, a fellow delegate from New Jersey.The fourth is Warrena T. Steele, who was the National Parliamentary Usage Director and presented her department\'s report to the convention Tuesday morning, July 4.The fifth is Pearl Kendall Hess, Director, Medical Temperance and Health, who presented her department\'s report to the convention Wednesday morning, July 5.Ms. Hess was another who advocated for the prohibition of marijuana.

The thirdsheet of paper, 4 by 6 inches, dated July 3, 1933 in pencil by Mrs. Farrington, includes two autographs and addresses.The first is from Lily Grace Matheson, who gave a talk on Wednesday afternoon, July 5, entitled \"Enlisting Crusaders.\"The second is from Violet Hill Whyte, an African American, who presented a talk \"Work Among Negroes\" on Saturday morning, July 1.Mrs. Whyte gained fame in 1937 when she became the first African American, male or female, to be hired as a police officer in Baltimore.
