\"FREEMAN FARM\"
Architectural Model
Built by Maxfield Parrish
1937-1945This offering is for one of only two existing complete architectural models made by Maxfield Parrish in his studio workshop at his home \"The Oaks\". This model \"Freeman Farm\"was made between 1937-1945 and was an integral part of mostBrown & Bigelow landscapes painted by Maxfield Parrish. As Parrish worked from photography the model was placed in various positions photographed and the image on a glass lantern slide was projected onto the canvas or board and traced.Purchased in 1985 in California through Alma Gilbert\'s San Mateo Gallery La Galeria. At the time Alma Gilbert owned Maxfield Parrish home \"The Oaks\" as well as the first Gallery to specialize exclusively in his works.
The architectural model was built by Parrish in his machineshop is made of wood/ masonite/balsa wood and hand painted. The actual model out of it\'s display case measures 26\" long by 14 1/2\" deep, total height is 11 1/2\" with 8\" height showing in fitted case.
Model comes with Oak and plexi glass case 53\" high by 33\" across by 21 1/2\" deep made by The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts for their four city tour and come with sale, along with all paperwork.I was told at one time by a reliable source that the \"Daniel\'s Farm\" used by Parrish for \"Sunup\" was designed by architect Stanford White. Stanford White was good friends with Agustus St Gaudens and did work and stayed in the Cornish colony of artistsThis model as well as the Fete model were exhibited at:
The American Precision Museum in Windsor Vermont (1995-1996), Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts June 19–September 25, 1999, The Currier Gallery of Art (November 6, 1999–January 23, 2000),
Memorial Art Gallery (February 19–April 30, 2000)
Brooklyn Museum of Art (May 26–August 6, 2000) and numerous other smaller venues including Maxfield Parrish Museum in Plainfield NH, TownHall in New Hampshire along with Maxfield Parrish painted stage backdrop, La Galleria in San Mateo Calif, Maxfield Parrish\'s home \"The Oaks\".
Also listed or shown in:
Maxfield Parrish book by Sylvia Yount both models exhibitedand cataloged in back of book.
\"Parrish and Photography\" by Alma Gilbert \"Freeman Farm\" model pictured.
\"The Mechanic Who Loved to Paint\" by Alma Gilbert Model picturedNOTE: Also shown is an original litho print exhibited with model and original painting through all exhibitions. The large wooden box was made by Maxfield Parrish Jr. for shipping, so the model fits perfectly into the box and can be screwed down securely. Comes with sale. Both models have been in my possession for over 30 years and I prefer to sell them together. I also suggest the potential buyer view models in person if at all possible. Ideally these models would benefit the American Museum of Illustration\" in Rhode Island as they own the murals from the Curtis Publishing company as well as the painting for the architectural house model \"Sunup\".
