This Silver Pearl Blue Diamond Vacumatic Major has a new Vac sac/diaphragm, and has been thoroughly cleaned and polished. I took out the old sac, and it had absolutely no ink residue on it. This pen has never been filled with ink! I rinsed the nib and feed, and again, no ink residue what-so-ever! Being New Old Stock, it didn\'t need much cleaning. The barrel imprint is very crisp with a \'8.\' date code, so 3rd qtr. of 1938. Parker switched to the number/dot date code system that year. It can\'t be 1948, otherwise it would have a plastic filling unit and not the Speedline, and around WWII Parker dropped the blind cap jewel as the metals were needed for the war effort. Finally, Parker had switched to the single tone 14K nib, and a black section and cap jewel as well. Parker stopped making this model of Vacumatic in 1948 in the USA, and 1953 in Canada.

This 1938 Vac has a beautiful and proper Parker Arrow 14K Solid Gold two-tone STUB nib, with a \'8.\' date code - same as the barrel. This nib glides over the paper quite smoothly. Stub and Italic nibs are my favorite. This nib is stunning, absolutely glorious! I\'ve never seen one that is essentially new - what a treasure. Quite often, the Palladium will be worn of from cleaning the nib over the years showing the 14K gold underneath. This is the best looking two tone nib I\'ve ever seen, and it\'s a Stub. I did dip it in ink to create the writing sample (I really needed to see the line variation) then rinsed it repeatedly. As long is it isn\'t filled with ink, a fountain pen is still considered new.

The trim is either Nickel or Chrome - Parker used both. Obviously, it looks great. The trim has a really nice sheen to it and looks splendid with the Silver Pearl cap and barrel. Quite often Nickel and Chrome trim is a bit dull by now and is usually pitted a bit. The single art deco cap band is nice and tight on the cap. There is a monogram panel, but it hasn\'t been used. The Blue Diamond clip looks excellent and isnice and tight on the cap as well. The split arrow clip was introduced by Parker in 1937, and in 1938 they added the Blue Diamond - Parker\'s indication of a Lifetime Warranty to compete with Sheaffer\'s White Dot, and Eversharp\'s Double Check Mark pens.

The cap jewels are in excellent condition - no chips or gouges - heck, not even any scratches, just what one would expect from New Old Stock. I don\'t see any nicks, gouges, bad scratches, etc. on the barrel, cap or blind cap. The barrel has a very slight bow to it about a half an inch from the blind cap - not sure what caused it. I took a picture of it; No. 11 - not really noticeable unless you are looking for it, but if I see it, you will know about it. This is an exceptionally nice Silver Pearl Vac Major - the best one I have ever seen. I love writing with Stub nibs and really thought about keeping this one, but if I did, I\'d fill it with ink and use it! Being NOS, it really needs to be in someone\'s collection - yours perhaps!

Parker made the Vacumatic in many sizes, both length and girth - typically the most common were the Debutante (smallest), Junior, Standard, Major, and Over-sized (later changed to Maxima). This one is a Major, and measures right at 5 1/4 inches capped, and just shy of 6 1/4 inches with the cap posted. I\'ve included a picture of 5 Vacs that I have previously owned for comparison purposes. From L to R, a Debutante, Junior, Maxima, Standard, and Major. There were other variations as well, but these are the 5 most common ones.

BTW, if you are relatively new to the Parker Vacumatic filling system (used in Parker 51\'s, Vacumatics, later model Duofolds, etc.) for maximum fill, depress the filling plunger about 8 - 10 times, with just a brief pause between plunges. This will assure a maximum fill.

This would make an extraordinary addition to your Vacumatic collection. It is very, very clean and obviously, you\'ll never see better barrel transparency. Great trim, and an exquisite cap and barrel with an extremely nice luster - still like new! Oh, it comes with the pictured original Parker box.
