DescriptionThis vintage candy container dates to the late 1940\'s, early 1950\'s, and was made by the E. Rosen Candy Company as a novelty candy container, and sold through one of their wholly owned subsidiaries, Tico or Rosbro. He is made from Styrene - which is hard plastic. He has wonder painted details, and a black plastic hat.
This same fellow was made in several different colors and slight style variations. He even shows up, in a slightly different form, as a skater, called a Jolly Skater. He is guaranteed antique and authentic! There were some similar reproductions made, but when you see them side by side, they are really quite different. The only change I made to this fellow was that I added a parasol. I looked for many years to find parasols that matched the ones that Rosen sold originally with some of their novelties - usually the Easter ones. I finally found some, and have them for sale in another listing. I decided to add one to the snowman, even though he never originally carried one, but gee, it looks cute! The parasols are NOT made by Rosen, but are the same age and style.
He stands 5\" tall, and has a cigar in his mouth (the tip is painted red). He has no breaks or damage to his plastic, just some yellowing along the glue lines, and a very slight separation on one side, visible in the photos - the piece is still quite tight (see the last photo). If you don\'t see any yellowing, btw, it possibly is a reproduction. He has just plain smooth plastic on the bottom.
The E. Rosen Company started business in Providence RI in 1895, and is still in business today. They sold candy, and had a number of novelty containers for their candy which included cards for their suckers as well as all kinds of plastic. Their candy containers have become highly prized by collectors.because of their charm and character.
