Description

Up for sale is a very nice Eversharp Skyline Demi fountain pen with a Brown Barrel, Cap, Section and Derby or so I thought. Under a bright light, the cap, barrel, and derby are actually Burgundy - only the section is Brown. When the Skyline was introduced, Wahl-Eversharp changed the pen material from Celluloid plastic to Polystyrene. The latter was easier to mold to size, thus reducing manufacturing costs, but over the years, the Polystyrene plastic had issues with brittleness, shrinkage, and color shift. In fact, the derby on this Skyline has shrunk just a bit. I noticed it as the over-the-top clip didn\'t seem to fit quite right.

I really like Wahl Eversharp Skyline fountain pens. A very unique design and well made. The Skyline was introduced by Wahl Eversharp in 1941.Strikingly modern in appearance, the Skyline (originally called the Skyliner) was designed by Henry Dreyfuss, who also streamlined the steam locomotives of the New York Central Railroad’s famed20th Century Limited. You do not need a very sharp eye to detect a strong resemblance between the locomotive and the Skylines!

I took the pen apart, including the nib and feed, then cleaned everything. I installed a new Skyline specific tapered ink sac for maximum fill. Over-all length capped is right at 5 inches, and about 5 1/2 inches with the cap posted, so this is the Demi size Skyline.

The cap, section and derby have the usual minor micro wear scratches, but no teeth marks, gouges or bad scratches. The Derby does have a couple of blemishes - almost like a very, very thin layer of plastic has peeled off. The barrel is in good condition except for a few teeth marks on the tip.

The over-the-top clip and upper cap ring look excellent - exceptionally clean. The filling lever shows almost no brassing except for a tiny area along the edges at the high point. This is typical for Skylines as when the cap is posted, it stops about 3/4 of the way up on the lever. So after years of posting the cap, the cap just wears the plating off. This Skyline is in good condition for a fountain pen over 70 years old!

On the upper cap ring there is an imprint: \'EVERSHARP SKYLINE PAT. MADE IN U.S.A.\' Also, if you look at the clip where it intersects the upper cap ring, you\'ll notice two \'Check Marks\'. This was Eversharp\'s indication of a Lifetime Warranty, like Sheaffer\'s White Dot, or Parker\'s Blue Diamond on the clip.

The 14K Solid Gold nib looks excellent - just very light micro scratches. Eversharp had a reputation for making excellent nibs of varying line widths and flex, but labeling of the nib style was via a sticker wrapped around the barrel of the pen. Once removed, determining nib style is rather subjective. This nib is very clean, a very smooth writer. I\'d judge it to be a \'F\' to \'M\' even leaning towards a \'MB\' depending on writing pressure. I\'m a bit heavy handed when writing with a fountain pen, so keep that in mind when judging line width from the picture of the writing sample.

This is a very nice example of a vintage Eversharp Skyline Demi Fountain Pen from the 1940\'s. This Skyline would make a great daily writer, a nice addition to your Skyline collection, or one very impressive signature pen; or all three! The cool thing about fountain pens is that the number of ink colors is almost endless. I actually mix 2 or 3 inks to create my own unique color. Of course it would help if I wrote down the formula!
