These five 73+ year old vintage handwritten vintage diarieswerewritten by
GENEVA ADELINE ELWELL - BONIN, and she lived in NORTHPORT, WALDO, MAINE.
When Geneva A Elwell was born on March 9,1910 in Northport, Maine, her father, Harvard W. was 44, and her mother, Fannie, was 22. She lost her father when she was only 10 years old.She married Francis Bonin in 1926 when she was just 16 years old. Their son, \"Howard\" was born on August 29, 1936. She had another baby on September 22, 1943.She died on July 19, 1991.
Geneva was 35 years old when she wrote the earliest diary.In her entries, she calls her husband \'\'dad\", and he works in the shipyard.she calls Howard \"Sonny\", and she calls the new baby \"Jr\". - She tells what happens every day,local happenings, which movies she goes to see, fires, \"Son\" hanging May Baskets,rumors, accidents & deaths, etc.
The diaries were written in the years of 1945,1946, 1947, 1948, and 1949.
HERE ARE A FEW EXCERPTS TAKEN FROM THEM:\" ... 16 children and a woman burned to death in Auburn place, where mother left them while at work, anywhere from 6 months to 2 years old .... School closed in Belfast on account of Scarlet Fever ....Pres. F.D. Roosevelt died at 3:35 p.m. - Harry Truman becomes President tonite, he was Vice President .... presidents funeral at White House 4 p.m. and another tomorrow morn at Hyde Park NY .... Agnes got scarlet fever I hear .... MussoliniExecuted .... Son & I to Vernard, he hung May Baskets & one to Buddy Dilling .... Germany surrended unconditionally to Russia England & U.S. .... All 3 Countries officially announced Europe War over this morn, it is officially over at 1 minute over midnight says Churchill .... Airplane crashed into 78th floor of Empire State building, NY. Killed 15 or so, and injured lots. Exploded and done lot of damage .... Russia at war with Japan .... Japan hasn\'t surrendered yet, been waiting since Saturday for reply to our peace terms ....Papers signed by Japan yesterday, final & official surrender ..... It\'s Thanksgiving by Presidents orders, only 3 States observing the last Thursday for it this year ....Lewis Drinkwater house burned around 8 pm, he lived other side of where ma & Clyde little house on road to Belfast ....Dad & Herbie K. out Unity in p.m., got 6 bags Pillsbury Best flour, $1.40 a bag. Not any flour in Belfast, say wheat is going to be scarce, everyone buzzing .... Railroad strike, most everything has been or is on strike .... \"and there is so much more!
Four of the diaries measure 5.25\" x 7.75\", and one measures 3.5\" x 6\". Each diary has a handwritten entry for every day. The diaries have no missing pages, however there are a couple loose pages in the 1946 diary.I will include copies of Geneva\'s birth record, 1940 census info, and also photo copy of her gravestone.
