1940s 2 Piece Short Sleeve Cotton Outfit accented withEyelet Trim

Anauthentic late 1940s early 1950s cotton gingham day two piece outfit or 2 piecedress in very good vintage condition!

This outfit is inremarkable vintage shape! The cottonfeels crisp and new. This perky outfitcame from the estate of a Newton, NClibrarian.

The cotton ginghamfabric is royal blue and white. The blueis darker than most of the photographs. Thereare no underarm stains, worn or thin spots and no patching. There are 3 small stain spots: 2 on lowerfront of the top and 1 on the upper skirt (see photos). The yoke and the edging may be cottonorgandy; there are a few places where the threads have pulled. It needs a good starching for that crisplook!

I have hand washedthe garment but not soaked it nor tried stain removal.

This blue and whitecotton gingham two-piece outfit has a center front opening with button and loopclosings, organdy yoke accented with eyelet edging, pin tucks and a flat circletrim, and short sleeves and a tied neckline.

The center frontopening has 19 white plastic ball buttons. Most of the buttons have tiny melted spots where they were, probably, hit with a hot iron. The front opening continues to the blouse hem. The front bodice gathers into a mid-waistinsert. The gathers allow room in thebust. The bodice front also gathersinto the yoke, where the seam is decorated with eyelet edging and additionaltrim. The bodice back is darted for fit and fits smoothly into the shoulder andcollar seams. The bodice is not lined. On the right back of the yoke is a 1” sectionwhere the trim will need to be tacked down.On the left side back there is a ¼” x 5/8” fray in the middle of theyoke piece (see photo; that’s a manila sheet of paper underneath the yoke…theyoke is really white). The photo alsoshows another small weak spot in the eyelet edging in the back. This section of yoke is 4” long and 2 ½” atthe widest end.

The pockets areworking pockets. They are 3 ¼” squaresset on the diagonal and button onto a ball button. The original owner used safety pins to try tokeep the eyelet edging from flopping.

The skirt has a 1 ½”wide waistband; the button is missing. There is a 6” side opening; all 3 buttons are there. The skirt yoke is 3 ¾”. It dart fits to the waistband in the back butnot in the front. The lower skirtgathers to the yoke and seams on the sides. There is a small stain on the gathered portion in the front (see photo). The skirt’s hem is a 2”, machine stitched with a ½” turn. There are 2 loops inside the skirt for usewith a hanger.

The neckline is whitecotton bias binding. It encases theneckline but opens up into 5/8” wide ties. One side is longer than the other so that when a bow is made the endshang equally.

The short sleeves gatherat the cap into the bodice. There aresmall pads inside the sleeve at the cap to support the gathers and give that classic40s shoulder look. The sleeves are edgedin 1 ½” wide eyelet organdy. The rightsleeve has a tear in the eyelet edging at the seam. The inside has a separate ¾” wide facing sothe seams can be opened, that tear tucked inside and re-sewn.

When purchasing a vintage garment, follow the measurements not thesize. Size specifications have changedover the years and a vintage garment may have been altered to fit the originalowner. Also, remember to leave easebetween your personal measurements and the garment’s. For example, a top that is 40’ in the bustarea will not fit a 40” bust…it will be tight.A 42” top will fit better.

Also a vintage garment was designed and cut to follow the bodysilhouette of its time period. For thebest fit (depending upon the garment) undergarments from the same time periodare suggested.

This garment has been carefully handlaundered and dried in the North Carolina sun!

When purchasing a vintage garment please remember that it is old. I may have missed a fade or a flaw. I may have misjudged the year. I am happy to be corrected.

All garments arevintage items and sold…AS IS. I maintaina non-smoking, pet-free studio, but I have no control over where the items Ioffer at sale were previously. Iattempt to represent my goods as honestly as possible, but sometimes somethingwill get by. If you have any doubtsabout an item, e-mail me BEFORE YOU PURCHASE!If I have grossly misrepresented an item, I will make a refund. Buyer pays for return shipments.
