Yes, I\'m the fellow who got one of these for Jack White at Third Man Records! And if you missed it, Neil Young and Jack White brought that one onto the Tonight Show in May to promote Neil Young\'s latest album \"A Letter Home\" - recorded entirely in that booth! This is the \'DE LUXE\' model of that booth, with the same insides, but in an extremely rare metal cabinet! EXTREMELY rare is actually an understatement as there are only TWO KNOWN to still exist in the entire world\"! (There were fewer than 100 of the wood model record booths ever made - and even fewer of the \'DE LUXE\' models ever made!) Nearly all are now lost to history. This may be your only chance to ever own one! This \"Record Your Own Voice\" record booth was made by International Mutoscope in Chicago around 1947 or 1948. It is, as we speak, delicately and respectfully being upgraded to record \"direct-to-plastic\", aka \"direct-to-vinyl\". The lathe in this recording booth originally cut at 78 rpm and made a recording on a 6\" acetate/lacquer covered cardboard Voice-O-Graph record disc that played for 65 seconds. The upgrades that are being implemented right now in this recording booth have taken 8 years to develop. When finished, the vended record will be cut live, played back, then delivered to you before your very eyes at 45 rpm for over three (3:00) minutes! This record booth is currently being restored, and will be finished in about 4 weeks. The known history of this particular record booth is that it was operated in SEATTLE, Washington, home to iconic rock musicians like JIMI HENDRIX, NIRVANA, BING CROSBY (I actually own a Voice-O-Graph record made by Bing), DAVE MATTHEWS, QUINCY JONES, MACLEMORE, etc. This booth started operation around 1947, and remained in operation through the 1950s, 1960s, and even into the 1970s. The black & white photo I\'ve attached in this sale was taken in 1960 at Walter \'Doc\' JONES\' FANTASTIC MUSEUM on Highway 99 in Seattle (you can see it in the very left edge of the photo.) There are actually a number of photos from 1960 all showing the Voice-O-Graph machine in the left edge (I think because they were emphasizing the MAN FROM MARS exhibit which was next to it!)In 1962, Doc JONES\' FANTASTIC MUSEUM had an exhibit at the 1962 Seattle World\'s Fair, and by October 1963 moved the entire museum from their Highway 99 location to the Food Circus Building on the grounds of the 1962 Seattle Worlds Fair, where it stayed for decades. The \'vintage color\' photo shown above in this sale was taken in 1967 at the Food Circus building location.Just think of all the great musicians that got their start in Seattle, perhaps taking a stab at their own record in this very record booth! Now you can too! This record booth originally operated on 50c, which it still can and will, but the upgrades will include a token acceptor should you want to use tokens instead of quarters. You may have seen my other record booth that recently sold: the one used by Warner Brothers in the 1965 movie “Inside Daisy Clover”. In the important opening scene Natalie Wood goes to the Santa Monica Pier, walks into that 25c record booth, and cuts a record. She sends the custom record off to the record company, which sets up the whole ‘a star is born’ type storyline. See a bit of it here (the good stuff starts around 2:20 in):The quality of the audio cut into the plastic record blank in the upgraded record booths is stunning. To give you an idea of the quality of the record that it cuts, this is a video I took as a final test of my UPGRADES in a latest booth:I will include a copy of the original manual to the lucky new owner! If you missed the Tonight Show episode in May, here are a couple pieces I found:And here\'s the initial clip on the Tonight Show:
