A delightful circa 1949 lot of 19 ink and paint original art illustrations by artist Elmer J. Cooper of Jamaica Plains, New York. Executed on a heavy paper stock in the style of cartoon panels. Some of the illustrations are signed and dated by Cooper in the lower right corner. Cooper\'s illustration style reflects the \"look\" of the era with a somewhat folky flair and often reminds one of tattoo art of the period. Women are often portrayed in a somewhat provocative style. The premise of the series is the life of beauty queen and United Airlines Stewardess \"Susanne Moore\" from Jackson Heights, NY. Cooper lays out Susanne\'s life telling a mostly chronological but somewhat erratic story. I\'m not sure if Cooper intended to publish his work or if it simply was a gift to Susanne Moore.

The artist begins with Suzanne\'s life as a young girl in the 1930s. By 1940, the \"curvaceous\" Suzanne is posed in a two piece bathing suit with a copy of the Daily News paper on the deck announcing \"L. I. Girl Wins Title\". The talented Suzanne is depicted ice skating at Lake Placid, bicycling in Central Park, riding horses, playing tennis, bowling and swimming. In 1948, we learn about \"The Life of a Flight Angel\" as Suzanne, the United Airlines Stewardess, flies to Chicago, Cleveland, Denver, Texas, San Francisco, Cheyenne, Lincoln Nebraska, Barcelona, Madrid, Havana and back home to Jackson Heights NY. The year 1948 also introduces Susanne\'s friend Norma (Broderick). A big year for Norma is 1949 when she wins the \"Miss New York\" beauty title at Jones Beach and goes on to represent New York at the \"Miss America\" contest in Atlantic City....and of course she won!....(well, maybe in imagination land as I checked and nobody by the name of Susanne Moore ever won that title.) Always pursued by men for dates, even the \"western wolves\" in Lincoln, Susanne constantly tries to juggle suitors, often turning down movie stars. After turning down an evening with Clark Gable and Tyrone Power, the artist takes an opportunity to insert a \"News Note\" reading; \"Of all the positions, professions and careers concerning girls, the airline stewardess holds all records for being the most sought for dates and marriages.\" By this point, Suzanne and her friend Norma are shimmying in grass skirts for a movie in Honolulu. Finally Susanne finds the right guy and marries in 1949 only to have triplet babies by 1950. She trades in the stewardess uniform that year for a vacuum sweeper and by 1959 has five children.

Approximate size of each sheet ranges from the smallest at 6-1/2\" X 8-3/4\" to the largest at 8-1/4\" X 10\". Condition; light soiling, toning, bends, stains, creases. one sheet is assembled from two panels attached on back by original paper tape.
