MORE DETAILS :The JewishInfantry Brigade Group (more commonly known as the Jewish Brigade Group or JewishBrigade) was a military formation of the British Army that served in Europe during the Second World War. The brigade wasformed in late 1944, and its personnel fought the Germans in Italy. After thewar, some of them assisted Holocaust survivors to emigrate illegally to Israel,as part of Aliyah Bet. A brigade group ofthe British army that was made up of Jewish volunteers from Palestine. The Jewish Brigade was formedin 1944 and helped liberate Italy in1945. Previous attempts had been made toincorporate Jews into the Allied forces. At the beginning of World War II Zionistleaders proposed the creation of an officialJewish unit within the British army. These talks dragged into 1941, and were finally discontinued. Meanwhile, some30,000 Jews from Palestine volunteeredfor the British army. After confirmingreports about the extermination of European Jewry in 1942 and 1943, the British decided that it wouldonly be fair to give Jews a chance totake revenge on the Nazis in an official capacity. They accepted the Zionist leadership\'s proposal to create a Jewishfighting force, and on September 20, 1944the British War Office announced the creation of the Jewish Brigade Group. Thebrigade was composed of 5,000 soldiers. The Zionist Flag was chosen as its banner—making it not the first Jewishunit to fight in the war, but the first oneto be recognized as representing the Jewish people. At the war\'s end, members of the JewishBrigade helped prepare Displaced Personsfor \"illegal\" immigration to Palestine. The British disbanded the brigade in July 1946. Beginning in 1920, GreatBritain ruled Palestine under a mandate created by the League of Nations. TheBritish were to facilitate the establishment of a modern Jewish homeland. Dueto Arab opposition to the proposed Jewish homeland in Palestine, the Britishinitially refused to establish a separate fighting unit of Jewish volunteersfrom Palestine. However, wartime manpower requirements and the strategic needto defend the Middle East induced the British to permit the formation of 15Palestinian Jewish battalions. These units were incorporated into the Britisharmy in September 1940. Jewish unitsfought with the Allies in Greece in 1941; 100 Palestinian Jews were killedthere and 1,700 captured by the Germans. On August 6, 1942, the British armyformed a Palestine Regiment out of three Jewish and one Palestinian Arabbattalion. The regiment fought in Egypt and in the battles of North Africa. The Jewish Brigade Group of the British army, which fought under the Zionist Flag, was formally established in September1944. It included more than 5,000 Jewish volunteers from Palestine organizedinto three infantry battalions and several supporting units. Under the commandof Brigadier Ernest Benjamin, the Jewish Brigade fought against the Germans inItaly from March 1945 until the end of the war in May 1945. After the German surrender, the Jewish Brigadewas stationed along the Italian border with Austria and Yugoslavia, and laterin Belgium and the Netherlands. Some soldiers from the Brigade helped create displacedpersons camps for Jewish survivors of the Holocaust. Brigade members alsobecame involved in organizing the flight of Jewish refugees from Eastern Europeand their clandestine entry into Palestine. Individual soldiers acquired armsfor the Hagana, the major Jewish underground defense organization in Palestine.Britain disbanded the Jewish Brigade Group in the summer of 1946. Some 30,000Jewish volunteers from Palestine served with the British forces during WorldWar II. More than 700 were killed during active duty. 1326
