1950s Yellow Hibiscus and Metallic Fern Silkscreen Print Shaheen Strapless Cocktail Dress Sz 6

click picture to enlargeDescription

A stunning 1950s original Alfred Shaheen Hawaiian metallic silkscreen print cocktail dress featuring the yellow hibiscus, the state flower of Hawaii. Alfred Shaheen was an important American designer who pioneered metallic silkscreen printing, started the tiki movement based on Hawaiian and Polynesian ethnic printed fabrics, and grew the fabric and clothing design industry in Hawaii from a cottage industry to an American industrial powerhouse employing hundreds of Americans producing iconic designs recognized around the world. This dress is exceptional. The iconic 1950s design of this dress is featured on the history page of the Shaheen website, and has a strapless smocked bodice with shelf bra pinched in the center of the bust, peaked pointed bust flaps over the shelf bra, a flattering V front nipped waistline, a low back and a wide circle skirt with inverted box pleats at the waistline flowing out to soft folds all around the wide sweep of the skirt. The bodice is lined with natural unbleached cotton, and has a metal zipper at the back which works perfectly and a hook and eye at the top of the zipper. The cotton print fabric is exceptional as well - a stippled chocolate brown ground with groupings of 3 to 5 large yellow hibiscus blooms with gold centers, and large fern leaves in between the hibiscus blooms screen printed in metallic gold. So very Hawaiian and so very tiki. But also classy and ready for a cocktail party - just add pearls, a strappy pair of heels and a wide brim hat. The measurements of the dress are as follows:

  • bust (armpit to armpit) 33\"
  • waist 24\"
  • hips open
  • mid bodice (at the gathered part of the shelf bra between the breasts) to hem 36\"

The size corresponds roughly to a US size 6 and fits my size 6 model beautifully, but please review measurements carefully to ensure a good fit. There is a bit of additional stretch in the bodice due to the smocking which covers the back and sides of the bodice. There is a brown label inside the dress with \"Alfred Shaheen Honolulu\" on it that is shown on the Vintage Fashion Guild label resource as a 1950s label from this designer (shown). The dress is almost pristine. The cotton is crisp crisp crisp and shows little if any wear, as does the label which looks new. The dress was recently cleaned and the only ssue I could find, and a very minor one at that, a small fuschia pink mark inside the bodice on the natural unbleached cotton - perhaps the dress was worn once by the original owner whose lipstick touched on the inside fabric of the bodice on the way on or off. Other than these minor issues, which cannot be seen when the dress is worn because it is inside, the dress is near mint. This is NOT a reproduction. This is an original 1950s iconic Shaheen cocktail dress in a yellow hibiscus and metallic fern print, only from Antiquarius Antiques. Hat and pearls sold separately. The dress is shown with a crinoline which is not included - these can be obtained at very little cost on . Scroll down to see more pictures of the dress.

If you are looking for new and perfect, then vintage is probably not for you. In many cases, vintage clothing has been worn and is no longer new, and that is why it is such a good bargain. Excellent antique or vintage condition rarely means new - do not expect new or perfect as there will almost always be some signs of wear, especially with older items. Sometimes we sell newer vintage items that are new old stock (NOS) so they have never been worn and can be in such excellent condition that there are no signs of wear. But some of the garments we sell are 75 years old or more, and even if they were never worn, the fabric may show signs of wear just from being stored all those years. Please assume that older vintage and antique items may have a little dust and/or a few age spots, unless we have specifically stated that we have recently laundered the item. Nevertheless, vintage is a great way to dress extravagantly without having an extravagant budget. You can often find extraordinary examples of antique, vintage or designer items that are wearable textile art and will make you look like a million bucks!
