The Homestead was a weekly publication or journal with an agricultural emphasis published in Hartford, CT and originally distributed by Mason C. Weld. This set of maps was produced after World War II and is a snapshot of the geographical state of the world in the early 1950s. The maps were produced by The Geographical Publishing Co. in Chicago. The maps are 27-3/4\" x 36\" and are bound at the top by a thin black metal strip folded over. A metal eyelet with a hole allow the maps to be hung on a wall.

Map #1 is a color Commercial Map of the New England states showing the counties for New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island. The map is surrounded by black & white vintage pictures or reproduced drawings that show the old agricultural and domestic technology vs the modern conveniences available in 1955.

Map #2 on the reverse is a color map of the US. Alaska and Hawaii are not included as they did not become states until 1959. There is a list showing the population numbers for the largest cities in the US in 1950.

Map #3 is a New Map of Europe that includes the Eastern portion of the USSR. A secondary map shows the boundaries of the post WWII division of Germany into French, British, US and USSR zones as well as the boundaries of Poland and Czechoslovakia. There is a listing of the member nations of the relatively new United Nations. Another list presents the then world\'s largest cities with populations over 1,000,000.

Map #4 on the reverse is a Political Map of Asiatic Coastal Area with blown up insert for the island of Formosa (Taiwan). The map is surrounded by black & white photographs of military hardware, such as airplanes, ships and artillery. I was particularly surprised to see a photo in the top left showing \"The mushroom cloud formation arising from history\'s first atomic artillery shell fired from the Army\'s 280-mm artillery gun.\"

Map #5 is a World Map with copyright date of 1954. It is surrounded by portraits and brief bios of all the Presidents of the US, from George Washington to Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Map #6 is an Historical Map of the United States showing the country\'s Westward Expansion. At the top is a chronology of important events in American history from its discovery in 1492 through to 1952. The entry for 1952 is \"US continutes to test the hydrogen bomb\". The colorful map shows the acquisition of territories and the main agricultural products produced by each state.

The maps are in very good condition, with a small amount of staining on one edge and wear on the bottom edge. Please email any questions.
