The Jewish National Fund(Hebrew: קרן קימת לישראל, Keren KayemetLeYisrael) (abbreviated as JNF, and sometimes KKL) was founded in 1901 tobuy and develop land in Ottoman Palestine (later British Mandate for Palestine, and subsequently Israel and the Palestinian territories) for Jewish settlement. The JNF is a quasi-governmental, non-profit organization.By 2007, it owned 13%of the total land in Israel. Since its inception, the JNF has planted over 240million trees in Israel. It has also built 180 dams and reservoirs, developed250,000 acres (1,000km) of land and established more than1,000 parks. In 2002, the JNF was awarded the Israel Prize for lifetimeachievement and special contribution to society and the State of Israel. The Betar Movement (בית\"ר,also spelled Beitar) is a Revisionist Zionist youth movement founded in 1923 in Riga, Latvia, by Vladimir (Ze\'ev) Jabotinsky. Betar has beentraditionally linked to the original Herutand then Likud political parties of Israel, and was closelyaffiliated with the pre-Israel Revisionist Zionist splinter group Irgun Zevai Leumi. It was one of manyright-wing movements and youth groups arising at that time that adopted salutesand uniforms. Some of the most prominent politicians of Israel were Betarim intheir youth, most notably Prime Ministers Yitzhak Shamir and Menachem Begin, an admirer ofJabotinsky.Today, Betar promotes Jewish leadership on University campuses aswell as in local communities. Its history of empowering Jewish youth dates backto before the State of Israel. Throughout World War II, Betar was a majorsource of recruits for both the Jewish regiments that fought the Nazisalongside the British and the Jewish forces that waged an ongoing guerrilla waragainst the British in Palestine. Across Europe, Betar militia played majorroles in independently resisting Nazi forces and other various assaults onJewish communities. The Irgun (Hebrew: אִרְגּוּן; full title: הָאִרְגּוּן הַצְּבָאִי הַלְּאֻמִּי בְאֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל Ha-Irgun Ha-Tzvai Ha-Leumi be-Eretz Yisrael, lit. \"The National Military Organization in the Land of Israel\"), wasa Zionist paramilitary group that operated in Mandate Palestine between 1931and 1948. It was an offshoot of the earlier and larger Jewish paramilitaryorganization Haganah (Hebrew: \"Defense\", הגנה).When the group broke from the Haganah it became known as the Haganah Bet(Hebrew: literally \"Defense \'B\' \" or \"Second Defense\", הגנה ב), or alternatively ashaHaganah haLeumit (ההגנה הלאומית)or Ha\'ma\'amad (המעמד‎). Irgun members were absorbed into the Israel DefenseForces at the start of the 1948 Arab–Israeli war. The Irgun is also referred toas Etzel (אצ\"ל),an acronym of the Hebrew initials, or by the abbreviation IZL. The Irgun policywas based on what was then called Revisionist Zionism founded by Ze\'evJabotinsky. According to Howard Sachar, \"The policy of the neworganization was based squarely on Jabotinsky\'s teachings: every Jew had theright to enter Palestine; only active retaliation would deter the Arabs; onlyJewish armed force would ensure the Jewish state\"Two of the operations forwhich the Irgun is best known are the bombing of the King David Hotel inJerusalem on 22 July 1946 and the Deir Yassin massacre, carried out togetherwith Lehi on 9 April 1948.The Irgun has been viewed as a terrorist organizationor organization which carried out terrorist acts. In particular the Irgun wasbranded a terrorist organisation by Britain and the Jewish Agency. The Irgun wasa political predecessor to Israel\'s right-wing Herut (or\"Freedom\") party, which led to today\'s Likud party. Likud has led orbeen part of most Israeli governments since 1977.Trumpeldorwas born in Piatygorsk. He joined the Russian army in 1902 and served in theRussian-Japanese war two years later. During the siege of Port Arthur he losthis left arm and was taken prisoner, receiving a high Tsarist order of meritfor his gallantry and zeal. In 1912, he settled in Eretz-Israel and for a whilelived at Deganyah. Following the outbreak of the First World War and hisrefusal to take Ottoman citizenship, Trumpeldor was expelled from the countryand joined the Allied war effort. He was a founder of the Zion Mule Corps in1915 and saw action in Gallipoli where he was shot through the shoulder. At theend of the war, Trumpeldor returned to Russia where he witnessed the Russianrevolution. In 1918, he established He-Halutz, the pioneering youth organizationthat prepared youngsters for settlement in Eretz-Israel. Following his return to Eretz-Israel,and his involvement in the defense of Tel Hai against the Arabs, a settlementin the Galilee, he was fatally wounded. He was killed together with seven otherdefenders and it is claimed that as he lay on his death bed, one of his finalutterances was, “Never mind, it is good to die for one\'s country.”JosephTrumpeldor (November 21, 1880 – March 1, 1920, Hebrew: יוסף Иосиф Трумпельдор), was an early Zionistactivist. He helped organize the Zion Mule Corps and bring Jewish immigrants toPalestine. Trumpeldor died defending the settlement of Tel Hai in 1920 andsubsequently became a Zionist national hero. According to a standard account,to him are attributed the last words, reminiscent of Horace: \"It does notmatter, it is good to die for our country.\"
