Sukkot, Succotor Sukkos (Hebrew: סוכות‎ or סֻכּוֹת sukkōtor sukkos,Feast of Booths, Feast of Tabernacles) is a biblical holiday celebrated on the15th day of the month of Tishrei (variously from late September to lateOctober). It is one of the three biblically mandated festivals Shalosh regalimon which Hebrews were commanded to make a pilgrimage to the Temple in Jerusalem. It follows the solemn holiday of Yom Kippur, or the Day of Atonement. Theholiday lasts seven days (eight in the diaspora). The first day (and second inthe diaspora) is a sabbath-like yom tov when work is forofferden, followed by theintermediate Chol Hamoed and Shemini Atzeret. The Hebrew word sukkōt isthe plural of sukkah \"booth or tabernacle\", which is a walledstructure covered with schach (plant material such as leafy treeovergrowth or palm leaves). The sukkah is intended as a reminiscence of thetype of fragile dwellings in which the Israelites dwelt during their 40 yearsof travel in the desert after the Exodus from slavery in Egypt. Throughout theholiday, meals are eaten inside the sukkah and some people sleep there as well.On each day of the holiday, members of the household recite a blessing over thelulav (closed frond of the date palm tree, bound with boughs and branches ofthe willow and myrtle trees) and etrog (yellow citron) (Four species). Accordingto the prophet Zechariah, in the messianic era Sukkot will become a universalfestival and all nations will make pilgrimages annually to Jerusalem tocelebrate the feast there. The Jewish National Fund (Hebrew: קרן קימת לישראל, Keren Kayemet LeYisrael)(abbreviated as JNF, and sometimes KKL) was founded in 1901 to buy and developland in Ottoman Palestine (later British Mandate for Palestine, andsubsequently Israel and the Palestinian territories) for Jewish settlement. TheJNF is a quasi-governmental, non-profit organization.By 2007, it owned 13% of thetotal land in Israel. Since its inception, the JNF has planted over 240 milliontrees in Israel. It has also built 180 dams and reservoirs, developed 250,000acres (1,000km) of land and established more than 1,000parks.In 2002, the JNF was awarded the Israel Prize for lifetime achievementand special contribution to society and the State of Israel.
