Purim(Hebrew: Pûrîm \"lots\", from the word pur, related toAkkadian pūru) is a Jewish holiday that commemorates the deliverance ofthe Jewish people in the ancient Persian Empire, with the aid of the Iranianking Xerxes, from destruction in the wake of a plot by Haman, a story recordedin the Biblical Book of Esther (Megillat Esther). According to the Bookof Esther, in the Hebrew Bible, Haman, royal vizier to King Ahasuerus (presumedto be Xerxes I of Persia), planned to kill all the Jews in the empire, but hisplans were foiled by Mordecai and his adopted daughter Queen Esther. The day ofdeliverance became a day of feasting and rejoicing. Purim is celebrated bygiving reciprocal gifts of food and drink (mishloach manot), givingcharity to the poor (mattanot la-evyonim), a celebratory meal (se\'udatPurim), and public recitation of the Scroll of Esther (kriat ha-megillah),additions to the prayers and the grace after meals (al hannisim). Othercustoms include drinking wine, wearing of masks and costumes, and publiccelebration. Purim is celebrated annually according to the Hebrew calendar onthe 14th day of the Hebrew month of Adar (Adar II in leap years), the dayfollowing the victory of the Jews over their enemies. In cities that wereprotected by a surrounding wall at the time of Joshua, Purim is insteadcelebrated on the 15th of the month on what is known as Shushan Purim, since fighting in the walled city of Shushan continued through the 14th. Today, only Jerusalem celebrates Purim on the 15th. A mask is an object normally wornon the face, typically for protection, disguise, performance or entertainment.Masks have been used since antiquity for both ceremonial and practicalpurposes. They are usually worn on the face, although they may also bepositioned for effect elsewhere on the wearer\'s body, so in parts of Australiagiant totem masks cover the body, whilst Inuit women use finger masks duringstorytelling and dancing.
