1960 Rex Gold Aluminum Replica Mardi Gras Doubloon:
benchecano Store of Rex GoldAluminum REPLICADoubloon. (HAS)Logo. Thereverse features the Rex Coat of Arms, an Artist's Pallette and the Mask of Comedyand reads"PRO BONO PUBLICO...MARDI GRAS...NEW 39 mm or1 1/2" in diameter due within 48 hours of doubloonis a Replica of the Very Rare 1960 Rex Gold Aluminum doubloon, the first doubloon in Mardi Gras History, designed by H. Alvin Sharpe. If the doubloon appears a little bit funny in the photos, it should, because these Replica doubloons were not struck like the originals were, but rather, sand casted. The sand casting process causes the many dimples that appear on both surfaces of this doubloon (especially noticeable in the reverse photos). They were specifically made this way to distinguish them from the very rare and expensive original small group of 1960 Rex Gold Aluminum doubloons. These doubloons were made for the 1970 NORD Saints, a 125 lb football team participating in the NORD Program (NORD stands for New Orleans Recreation Department). These children were able to share a bit of New Orleans Mardi Gras with the members of other recreation departments in surrounding areas during competition between the groups. The 2013 Doubloon Guide lists this doubloon at $5.50.
