Description:

Offered here is a very nice original soft cover commissioning book from the commissioning of the super aircraft carrier USS John F. Kennedy CVA-67. The CVA designation was later changed to CV-67, The ship was the only ship of her class, a subclass of the Kitty Hawk-class aircraft carrier, and the last conventionally powered aircraft carrier to be commissioned.

The soft cover book has a ship’s logo that was designed by the first commanding officer Captain Earl Preston Yates.

The book contains information about the ship’s mission, the seal, John F. Kennedy, ship’s fact sheet and a center sheet that is the program from the commissioning. There are full page black & white photos that include John f. Kennedy, President Johnson, Clark M. Clifford Secretary of Defense, Paul H Nitze Deputy Secretary of Defense, Secretary of the Navy Paul R. Ignatuis, Caroline Kennedy** Ship’s Sponsor and Principal Speaker Robert S. McNamara Former Secretary of Defense. There are many other smaller photos of naval offers including the Commanding Officer Captain Earl Preston Yates and the Executive Officer Commander Charles Ross Smith, Jr

**Listed on ceremony program as: Remarks by Ship’s Sponsor: Caroline Bouvier Kennedy.

The rest of the book contains multiple list of commissioning officers and crew members by states as follows: Ship’s Officers, Chief Petty Officer List, Ship’s Crew [11 pages!], Marine Detachment, and a Honorary Plankowners List.

A Plankowner is s special honor designation for any officer or crew member of a US Navy ship at the time of commissioning or at the time of decommissioning.

I am a John F. Kennedy commissioning crew member plankower and I am offering this commissioning book that has been stored away for many years and it is now actually 49 years old.

I am listed under California as Tobler, J.E. JO3. I was at the time a Third Class Journalist assigned to the Public Affairs Office.

I took part in the planning of the ceremonies for the commissioning. Jacqueline Kennedy with all her children and Senator Ted Kennedy attended the commissioning also. Also as noted above Robert S. McNamara Former Secretary of Defense was the main speaker.

Not noted in the book is the following: At the time Senator Kennedy noted after the ceremonies that the commissioning of the ship was the best public affairs military event that he had ever attended.

The book is both a nice piece of naval military history as well a nice piece of John F. Kennedy memorabilia for any soft cover book is 9” high by 6” wide. It has around 45 un-numbered pages.

Condition:The the book is in original excellent new condition.
