1970 President Richard Nixon SIGNED AUTOGRAPH California Angels Anaheim Stadium Product Description

\"SATURDAY\'S TOYS Presents...\" a unique autographed signature fromPresident Richard M. Nixon... SIGNED AS PRESIDENT at Anaheim Stadium.

Signed; in-person; on Sunday, July 26, 1970 at Anaheim Stadium (now known as Angel Stadium of Anaheim). Nixon had arrived that day to witness the California Angels host the Washington Senators. Though Nixon had earlier been to a Los Angeles Angels game at Wrigley Field in 1961, this would be his very first visit to the Angels\'new home in Anaheim, California.

Large in-person autograph is on a sheet of legal sized paper (8.5\" x 14\")as obtained from the California Angels dugout. The opposite side of the sheet includes the \"Angels Statistics\" (including reference to Jim Fregosi) forthat season\'sgames through the previous day, July 25. Signature is 3.75\" long x 1\" tall; signed in black ink. Autograph islocated at the top quarter section of the folded page and has been in storage since that day.

As a 14 year-old teenager, I had been invited to attend the game with my cousin. While my aunt wasgiving us a ride to the stadiumwe learned over theradiothat Nixon was going to be at the game. Someone made ajoke about how great it would be if we could getthe President\'sautograph. We laughed and quickly forgot about the idea. However, after the President threw out the opening pitch and was escorted to his seat behind the Angels dugout, we noticedsome other kids lining up in the aisle at the top rowof that section of box seats behind the Angels dugout (third base side). The Secret Service would allow a few kids to go down the aisle between innings. We decided that this would be our chance.

I was standing ahead of my cousinin theline and my heart was racing when I got the sign to proceed to the President\'s seats. There were several people between President Nixon and the aisle where I was standing... but somehow he heard me say the words, \"Mr. President, can I have your autograph?\" I passed him my souvenir program and he signed his name on the scoresheet. That signature will remain in my own collection along with my souvenir program and ticket stub.

However, not knowing whether my cousin would get his turn for an autograph... I then asked the President, \"Can I get one more for my cousin?\" He agreed but thenrealizedthat he didn\'t have any more paper. The man next to him called down to the Angels dugout and asked for some paper for the President. The result is the unique signed Nixon document offered on today. Though the President obliged with a smile... I never told my cousin of my windfall. But don\'tfeel sorry for my cousin... He got his own signature a few minutes later anyway (though he doesn\'t remember what he did with it!)

Among the 15,403 fans in attendance that day... we were surely two of the luckiest kids in the ballpark. Nixon would witness quite a game... staying until the very end as the Angels scored the winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning. And the man who had called for extra paper from the dugout... turned out to be none other than Gene Autry. While I had listened to\"Back in the Saddle\" and \"Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer\" plenty of times... I had no idea what Gene Autry looked like. On that day, he was just the old guywith a seat next tothe President...

Pictured here (for illustration only; not included in sale) is the newspaper photo of Nixon and Autry,as published the following dayin the Anaheim Bulletin.

sale includes the AUTOGRAPH ONLY; but we\'ll also include a postcard from the Nixon Library and Birthplace that depicts several otherPresidents (including Nixon,John F. Kennedy, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Ronald Reagan, Dwight Eisenhower, Harry Truman and George Bush)throwing out the first pitch; a truly American tradition...
