From Ward Kimball's final (and unfinished)assignmentfor theWalt Disney Studio. Until his retirement, Kimball had been the director responsible for development of this film.

Circa 1971 - 1973... With Roy O. Disney's passing in December of 1971, this would be the first time since the company was founded in 1923that one of the Disney brothers was no longer at the helm.

After Roy Disney's death, Disney management executive, E. Cardon Walker, was given thejobas President of Walt Disney Productions... andwhatever creative license Kimball may have enjoyed as an animator during the "Walt years" then quickly faded from view.

Ward Kimballwent on an extended "vacation"... andofficially retired in August 1973. Card Walker is said to have disliked the project andpulled Kimball's filmfrom production. The partially completed work remains sealed in the Disney vaults and has never been released in any form.

The"Bingo" project has been largelyoverlooked inDisney history projects published to date. It is possible that this may be the same project referred to in the essential John Canemaker text, "Walt Disney's Nine Old Men & the Art of Animation" (page 122) as "Play Now, Work Later"; a "biting script about a cartoon dog in a realworld. The film was shelved in mid-production because it was un-Disney." An overview of Kimball's career was included inCanemaker'sstudyasWard Kimballwas part of this group of "Nine Old Men."

Initial research indicates that Stan Freberg recorded the character voice and Charlie Downs assisted with animation on the project. This cel is among the few known to have beenoffered for sale through any venue. Preserved in storagefor the past 40+ years. (see our accompanying sale for the vintage model sheet for the same project)

From the private animation collection of a former story, layout, and background artist at the Walt Disney Studio; later to serve as a producer of animated cartoon series at Disney and other studios as well.
