Galilee (Hebrew: הגליל‎ HaGalil, lit: the province, AncientGreek:Γαλιλαία, Latin:Galilaea, Arabic: الجليل‎ al-Jalīl) is a large region in northern Israel which overlaps with much of theadministrative North District and Haifa Districtof the country. Traditionally divided into Upper Galilee(Hebrew: גליל עליון‎ GalilElyon), LowerGalilee (Hebrew: גלילתחתון‎ Galil Tahton), and WesternGalilee (Hebrew: גלילמערבי‎ Galil Ma\'aravi), extendingfrom Dan to the north, at the base of Mount Hermon, along Mount Lebanonto the ridges of MountCarmel and MountGilboa north of Jeninand Tulkarmto the south, and from the Jordan Rift Valley to the east across theplains of the JezreelValley and Acreto the shores of the Mediterranean Sea and the coastal plainin the west. The Golan Heights (Arabic: هضبة الجولان‎ Haḍbatu \'l-Jawlān or مرتفعات الجولان Murtafaʻātu l-Jawlān, Hebrew: רמת הגולן‎,Ramat ha-Golanalso called the Golan or the Syrian Golan, is a region in the Levant. The exactregion defined as the Golan Heights is different in different disciplines:Theearliest evidence of human habitation dates to the Upper Paleolithic period.According to the Bible, an Amorite Kingdom in Bashan was conquered byIsraelites during the reign of King Og. Throughout the Old Testament period, the Golan was \"the focus of a power struggle between the Kings of Israeland the Aramaeans who were based near modern-day Damascus.\" The Itureans,an Arab or Aramaic people, settled there in the 2nd century BCE and remaineduntil the end of the Byzantine period.[OrganizedJewish settlement in the region came to an end in 636 CE when it was conqueredby Arabs under Umar ibn al-Khattāb. In the 16th century, the Golan wasconquered by the Ottoman Empire and was part of the Vilayet of Damascus untilit was transferred to French control in 1918. When the mandate terminated in1946, it became part of the newly independent Syrian Arab Republic. Internationallyrecognized as Syrian territory, the Golan Heights has been occupied andadministered by Israel since 1967. It was captured during the 1967 Six-Day War,establishing the Purple Line. On 19 June 1967, the Israeli cabinet voted toreturn the Golan to Syria in exchange for a peace agreement. Such overtureswere dismissed by the Arab world with the Khartoum Resolution on September 1,1967. In the aftermath of the 1973 Yom Kippur War, Israel agreed to returnabout 5% of the territory to Syrian civilian control. This part wasincorporated into a demilitarised zone that runs along the ceasefire line andextends eastward. This strip is under the military control of UN peace keepingforces. Construction of Israeli settlements began in the remainder of theterritory held by Israel, which was under military administration until Israelpassed the Golan Heights Law extending Israeli law and administrationthroughout the territory in 1981This move was condemned by the United NationsSecurity Council in UN Resolution 497 which said that \"the Israelidecision to impose its laws, jurisdiction and administration in the occupiedSyrian Golan Heights is null and void and without international legaleffect.\" Israel asserts it has a right to retain the Golan, citing thetext of UN Resolution 242, which calls for \"safe and recognised boundariesfree from threats or acts of force\" However, the international communityrejects Israeli claims to title to the territory and regards it as sovereignSyrian territory. Israeli Prime Ministers Yitzhak Rabin, Ehud Barak, and EhudOlmert each stated that they were willing to exchange the Golan for peace withSyria. However, in 2010, Israeli foreign minister Avigdor Lieberman told Syriato abandon its dreams of recovering the Golan Heights Approximately 10% ofSyrian Golan Druze have accepted Israeli citizenship. According to the CIAWorld Factbook, as of 2010, \"there are 41 Israeli settlements and civilianland use sites in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.\" The Golan Heights,Israel’s mountainous northern region, is one of the most beautiful and mosttraveled parts of the country. There are wonderful scenic treasures alongsidelovely nature reserves, historic and archeological sites and attractions forthe whole family. Some people call this area the Israeli Texas, because of itssize, while others see it as a land of plentiful water sources. The beauty ofthe Golan is so captivating that some visitors return here again and again toenjoy the sights. The view from the Golan Heights becomes more and moremagnificent as you gradually climb from the plains, at 300 meters above sealevel in the south to 1,200 meters in the north. The Eastern edge of thisregion is dotted with a chain of volcanic hills, while the south and westborder on basalt cliffs that descend to the Jordan Valley Rift,LakeKineret and the Yarmuk River.Scattered throughout the Golan Heights are a widevariety of sites that offer a broad spectrum of activities for tourists andhikers throughout the year.
