Mint officials estimated that 3,700 pieces were struck and that they recovered 145 sets with the No S cent that had not shipped. Another mint official stated that 3,700 was the average number of proof coins struck from a die, and that there was no way to accurately project the mintage. Many reputable numismatists feel that there are fewer than 200 pieces extant. In any case, this is an infrequent opportunity to acquire a true American rarity.
