From a Tucson estate of Jewish heritage some years ago is this visually compelling and genuinely antique Holy Land grand tour or pilgrimage olive wood carving of the Tomb of Absalom (or Yad Avshalom / Pillar of Absalom) and that of Zachariah in the Kidron Valley with the Tomb of Bnei Hezir at center, an I believe 19th or possibly very early 20th Century artisan crafted proposition. The beautifully rendered repousse decor shows an unmistakable representation of these holy landmarks - this is all assuredly hand accomplished. A calligraphic Hebrew inscription (which I have not had translated - if you know, please let me know) provides further evidence of the exact depiction. There is an ancient oval ink stamp \"(Wording in Hebrew ) / J. Rabinowitz Drechsler / *JERUSELEM*\" to the back. I have found record of several surviving letters written by Josef Rabinowitz Drechsler to David Simonsen - Chief Rabbi of the Jewish Congregation of Copenhagen - from 1895 on line (at least one of which bears this same ink stamp), and a book with olivewood covers (this held within the Center For Jewish History, New York City) crafted by him during early 20th Century times, as temporal provenance . Such charismatic and visually beautiful remembrances of belief found a prominent place among the treasured belongings of the devout in a new land, providing an anchor for worship in America; alternatively, they were acquired by Jewish pilgrims to the Holy Land and even Gentiles on Grand Tour, the latter no less aware of the historic importance of these sites. An impressive object from what was then Palestine, and of absolute Judaic association, the depiction will provide a cherished tie to historic tradition in an office or room in your home. Condition is quite fine with a beautiful aura of time to the old surfaces. The carving was made from a whole branch slab of olive wood likely harvested not far from the depicted locality, with the bark still showing all around. There are just typical and expected signs of handling and long display, visible in the pics and here simply more evidence of the real thing. I have avoided the urge to clean, though that would be an easy enough job if so inclined. Size is about 4 in. long (horizontal, as you view the carved tomb structures) and 3 5/8 in. vertical (when so viewing); about 15/16 in. thick. If you collect the material culture of Jewish tradition come from a place of faith and especially such Pre WW1 examples of old Judaica as this, or simply wish this single improvement to the ambiance of a room in your home, this will have great meaning for you.
