It was common in France and other countries for officers with substantial wealth to commission a portraitbefore they went to war. This piece looks like it belongs in a museum. I am not an art expert, so please examine the pictures closely and determine if you want to purchase this piece. The entire piece, including the frame, measures a whopping 48\" by 38\". It is not dated but it is signed Josef Baier or Raier. I do not know if this is the original frame, but it does have those framing lines on the actual oil painting that indicates that it has been mounted on this frame for a considerable amount of time.
