Russian Orthodox Icon \"SAINT GEORGE\". Russia, icon painted in the 19th century. Wood, tempera, gesso, hand painted. Size 22,2 x 18 cm (8.7\" x 7.1\" x 0.8\").

The saint and great martyr, George the Victorious, lived at the end of the 3rd to the beginning of the 4th century in the region of Cappadokia in Asia Minor. He was one of the senior military leaders in the Roman army of Emperor Diocletian. At the time of recurring persecution Christians, St. Jorge spoke in the Senate against the plans of Emperor, for which he was subject to extreme torture and beheaded, but he displayed unshakeable faith. The deaf of the martyr became a victory for faith, from which came the title \"the Victorious\". In Russia, St. George was considered a protector of Russian forces. In this icon St. martyr George on a horseback, piercing a dragon with a spear; to the right- a schematic representation of buildings and a crowned female figure holding a dragon with a lead.

Executed in traditional style. Very rare and nice piece of religious art.

The certificate is available upon request from Lithuanian Culture Department testifying the authenticity and age of the icon.
