Presented is a marvelous, Russian silvercloisonné icon triptych, made by Pavel Ovchinnikov of Moscow in 1891. Thesilver the whole outside is covered with fine silver wire work filled in withcolorful opaque enamel. This is a lovely cloisonné Icon.

This is asuperb antique imperial Russian sterling silver & enamel triptych travelicon. From pre-Soviet Imperial Russia, this folding miniature altar pendant, craftedin 84” silver, unfolds to reveal a colorful enamel triptych incorporatingsaints and the Twelve Apostles. To the reverse the icon is stamped with themakers mark “ПО” Russian silversmith maker Moscow and a maker’s mark for theOvchinnikov firm (Pavel Ovchinnikov. Assayers mark, Silver standard mark84\", Moscow hallmark depicted an “ПО” and silver imperial standart84\".History:

Pavel Ovchinnikov, made an importantcontribution to the development of enamel art in Russia.The masters of his firm enjoyed an excellent command of suchdiverse techniques as champlevé enamel, enamel on filigree, enamel varnish inthe oriental style and cloisonné enamel (which Ovchinnikov was the first torevive in Europe). The company also widely employed window or stained-glassenamel, when transparent, multi-colored enamel was applied to the ajour carcassof the object, shining like medieval stained-glass windows.

Jeweler, silversmith, goldsmith,enameller, merchant, industrialist. Hallmark: П.О. or П.Овчинниковъ in arectangle. Born in the family of a serf called Akim Ovchinnikov in the villageof Otradnoe in Moscow Province (1830). Sent by Prince Dmitry Volkonsky to studyin Moscow (1842), where he served as an apprentice in the jeweler workshop ofhis brother Andrei (1844–50).
