Early 1900s Impressionist Pastel Bulgarian German Royal Princess Nadejda child:

I inherited the pastel portrait from my mother. We believe it to be the Bulgarian Princess Nadezhda (Nadejda) at around the age 4-6. Since Nadezhda was born in 1899, the pastel was probably drawn around 1905. We believe it to be Nadezhda because the girl looks very much like photos we have found of the young princess AND mostly because there is a note firmly affixed to the back of the pastel, which reads\"Ownership His Majesty King Ferdinand of Bulgaria\" (translation of eigentum seiner majestät des königs ferdinand von bulgarien). It is possible the pastel was among Ferdinand I and his successor\'s, Tsar Boris, property that was \"nationalized\" in December 1947.
The pastel is signed on the lower right side, but the signature is difficult to make out. It looks something like Ali Holkechoff de Hausz. The artist may not have been well-known, but possibly one who did portraits for the royal family. We believe the portrait to have historical value in that Nadezhda\'s father, Ferdinand I, was a first cousin of Russian Tsar Nicholas II and related to Queen Victoria and Edward VII. The pastel was given a general appraisal by Sloans and Kenyon sale House in Bethesda as in the European style by possibly an English, French, or German artist.
We don\'t have the provenance of the pastel, but it was purchased about 30 years ago at Little House Antiques in Phoenix, Arizona, which has since gone out of business. The gold wood and gesso frame was made especially for the portrait. The damage to the gesso ribbon on the frame is beingprofessionalyrepaired.
