19th Century Folk Art Watercolor Portrait Naval Officer
The frame is original or periodto this portrait, made of black painted wood and measures 5 1/8 x 6 1/8 inches. It is a very deep frame (1.5 inches thick) with gold colored inner liner. The glass is present.
The portrait is watercolor on paper. The sitter wears a gold colored anchor on his shirt. Although his tunic is not a standard navy uniform, because of its deep blue color I imagine it to be a variety of dress uniform, formal attire. The painting dates from 1825-30 period. Aside from some minor splotches of toning, he is in fine state of preservation.
Thisportrait displays very well andwill fit nicely in your collection of folk art portraits.
