19th Century Malaysian Islamic Brass Hand Washing Kettle century Malaysian Islamic brass hand washing kettle, cast using the \'lost wax\' process. The kettle would have been used to hold water to wash the right hand after eating. Malays traditionally did not use eating implements, only the right hand: the kettle would have sat on the ground, hence its splayed foot, then lifted with the left hand.
The body is decorated with geometric patterns and bamboo-like reeding, the handle with a diamond-shaped floral cartouche. The domed lid sits over, rather than inside, the neck of the kettle and an openwork fan joins the spout to the body.
As can be seen from the images, there is some pitting to the surface above the foot and unsure whether the clips holding the handle in place are replacements. The brass is nicely patinated but would benefit from further cleaning to remove the layers of brass polish which have accumulated over the years.
