This is a wonderful old antique silver pendant from our personal collection. We have owned it for approximately 25 years. It is Russian and the mark indicates that it was produced in Kiev in the 1880-1908 time frame by an unidentified artisan. It measures approximately 1 1/8” in length. The pendant is marked (84) for silver purity. This is expressed in Russian zolotnicks and translates to a silver content of .875 as measured in the west (roughly the equivalent of American coin silver). As previously stated, the piece is signed (see photos) although evidently nothing is currently known about the craftsman.

The pendant is decorated with bright cut decoration and a rope design bezel which contains an image of the famous poet and author Alexander Pushkin (1799-1837). When we originally purchased this item we thought the image might be an old photograph. It has at the bottom Pushkin’s name in Cyrillic. Once we discerned that it was Pushkin’s name, we realized that it couldn’t be a photo as the famous literary figure died in 1837 prior to the date of practical photography (c. 1839). Therefore, we conclude the inset image is taken from an engraving. The image is coated with a clear substance, perhaps lacquer.

The pendant is in good original condition exhibiting only normal wear and has no repairs. The image coating has a couple of dings acquired over time but that’s to be expected as the item is well over a hundred years of age. Before we forget, the pendant also as three initials incised in script on the back (see photos) probably in Cyrillic. Who they refer to, we have no idea. This is a very interesting old piece and we wish we knew the history behind it. This is a nice item and deserves to be preserved.
