An antique Anglo-Indian bovine snuff box.
Hand-carved bone with white metal hinge and brass nails.Parallelogram form.
Measures 4\" in length diagonally, 1½\" wide and 1⅛\" deep.
It weights 92.84 g.
Very good condition. Hinge intact and structurally sound. There appears to be a chip to one corner, but this looks original to the piece and therefore not damage.
Certainly 19th century. What it\'s made of exactly is very difficult to tell. It almost looks like ivory; the surface is covered in lines, not unlike Schreger lines. Many of these lines are tool marks. However, the more likely story is that it\'s some kind of bone. The piece has been constructed so that the cross-section of the material appears at either end. My feeling is that it\'s Anglo-Indian, however boxes like these were made all over throughout the 19th century and into the 20th century. The hinge, to me, looks like typical Indian or Asian white metal.
