Antique TEKKE TURKMEN KHALYK, Dowry Wedding Trapping, Central Asian tribal, Steppes of Turkmenistan, circa late 1870\'s - 1885, and coming inquite goodoverall original condition for the collector specialist. The exactsize is: 15\" x 26\" (38 x 66 cm). These rare and oddly shaped, pile-woven, textiles were specifically made by the bride-to-be as part of her dowry and they were tied across the chest of the lead camel carrying the betrothed atop a \"kibitka\" litter during her wedding procession whereby she left the clan of her parents and joined that of her husband. After being settled in their new yurt, the weaving was displayed in a place of honor and used during migrations. Later they became teaching tools for her daughters. Khalyks are, perhaps, the most coveted of all textile creations in the Tekke weaving repertoire by collectors. This is the first one that I am aware of that has ever been posted on sale. Structurally, it is asymmetrically knotted (200 kspi) open to the right on natural ivory wool warps and finely spun natural light brown wefts that seems to be more like camel or goat hair than wool in nature. The overall condition is quite good showing nice even original pile height. The top and bottom endings are both original and complete. Other than a gouge on the left side over-casting near the top (see close up photo), the side cords are all original and complete. Note that there are two stress tears at the bottom of the main panel where the aprons begin from ethnographic age use (see close up photos) that have been simply mended in the past for the sake of posterity. These tears are caused by the stride of the camel\'s front legs and is present on many published pieces of this type. Many others have had these rips artistically restored for aesthetic purposes. There is one red dye lot, sparingly used, that is a bit tip faded and seems to be an early, and expensive at the time, non-natural red called Ponceau 2R, that the Turkomen tribes began to use during the last quarter of the 19th century. This weaving has just been professionally cleaned to museum standards to remove accumulated dust. It is immediately ready to be placed in a collection or be shown as a decorative antique Turkoman tribal textile wall art display in the home or office.
