Here is a Sunderland pottery Christening egg...... it is a small size compared to the ones I have had in the past....this is like a \" Banty \" egg.
It has underglaze coloured FLOWERS design and then it has had some black wording added at a later time in my opinion .. its not fired is the black wording.. its certainly hand painted on and is coming off in places which is a pity.
It has a distinct
R. KIRBY which is underlgaze writing and the rest of the black wording is painted on top of the glaze in MY opinion.......a faint date 18?? it might be 19?? but looks more like 1823 having a guess and then an even fainter which looks like a line is a word beneath .... looking on the other side it has 3 initials something like R.W. ?. easy to read date 1906 then another faint word which looks like a line.
It could well be a date of Born 1823 and Died 1906....it is not out of the question.
I will LEAVE it up to you though as to those dates.. the egg does have scuffs and rubs on the pottery .. these are still VERY RARE to find these days.
The egg is 2 and 1/8th inch long x 1 and 5/8ths inch wide.. it has NOT got any holes in it.
A very nice local North East Sunderland pottery Christening egg.... had it been only in a black or sepia print it would have been a Whitehaven Darning Egg....of a similar period but clearly its NOT one of those.

If you return the item because you\'ve changed your mind, and there is no error in the description, return postage will not be refunded.
