A quantity of hand written letters from Seymour John Fortescue,amongst other things Captain of the Royal Yacht Osborne,Equerry to The Prince of Wales,Boer War hero.About thirty items here,at a quick glance dating from about 1897 to 1903.There must be well over a hundred written sides,a very large and interesting lot.This is the last of similar items by Fortescue to be listed-please take a look at the others.All sent to Lady Edith Wolverton and the content is sometimes quite riveting.Seymour Fortescue was born 10th.February 1856,the second son of the 3rd.Earl Fortescue.He entered the Royal Navy as a midshipman in 1869 aged just thirteen,swiftly rising through the ranks and distinguishing himself in the Egyptian and Sudan campaigns.Appointed Equerry in Waiting to HRH The Prince of Wales (the future Edward VII) in 1893,he captained Queen Victoria\'s Royal Yacht Osborne and was Commander of HMS Monarch.Naval ADC to Lord Roberts,he was mentioned in despatches and awarded the CMG for his services during the Boer War. The recipient of all the letters,nee Lady Edith Amelia Ward,was daughter of William Ward,1st Earl of Dudley,who married Lord Wolverton in 1895.A stunning social butterfly in the Victorian aristocratic milieu,rumours abounded of her connections with \"Bertie\" (the future Edward VII.) I\'ll try to give a flavour of some of the content but the range and detail is so extensive that I can\'t hope to include but the smallest proportion.It would take very many hours to go through them all,a pleasure which I will leave to the winning buyer.Letter from on board HMS Renown in the Mediterranean,guest of Capt.Tyrwhite.Playing polo in Malta...dining at the newly constructed Ritz in Palermo......few days in Monte Carlo. Black bordered letter from HRH Royal Yacht Osborne.Quantity of letters from Fortescue at Down St.,London.Describes his visit to Lord Derby\'s Knowsley Estate for the 1899 Grand National.Lengthy description of the actual race....\"two French horses were engaged - Prefet and Pistache.When the owner of the former saw the fences he simply said \'je ne pratique pas avec de tels obstacles\' and sent his horse home but the other gallant fellow started.His jockey pitched on to the horses neck at every obstacle and when he came to the big fence just before the water he fairly went over his horse\'s head.\"......\" Ambush (owned by the Prince of Wales to whom Fortescue had acted as Equerry) ran a good race and could have finished close up second with Ford of Fyne but was eased when Anthony found that he had no chance.He is sure to win the Grand National in the next few tears.\".....Fortescue a pretty fair judge,Ambush winning the 1900 National.Going to Newmarket for the 2000 Guineas meeting,visit to Sandringham.There are other letters from all over Europe - from the Paris Ritz,Hotel Weimar Marienbad,The Turf Club,Schloss Friedenstein Gotha (where he is \"tired to death of heel clicking German warriors.\")Between tours of duty he amply indulges himself in his consuming interest in horseracing,cards (particularly fond of Baccarat at Cannes),and golf.Fascinating original letters which I\'m sure would handsomely repay further research.Offered at and just 99p opening offer.
