Offering for your consideration is alovely mid19th centuryAntique Amercian Folk Art reverse glass tinsel painting inthe original grain painted frame.
The subject matter consists of a prettily painted wreath which is composed of mixed flowers in tones of pink and blue. The center of the wreath holds a nosegaywith two sprays of pink roses and buds. It was most probably made on the occasion of a wedding, as it has a bridal feeling to it.
The painting is backed with tin foil, which gives a twinkling affect to the art form when it is touched by light.
The piecehas a crack which runs across the center of the painting. It has been professionally stabilized behind an additional pane of glass, which was then reset into the original frame.There are bubbles and irregularitiesin the glass, which authenticate the painting\'santique status. The outer frame measurements are about16 1/2\"long by 12 1/2\" high.
There was a recentexhibit at the AMERICAN MUSEUM OF FOLK ART in NYC of this Folk Art genre, which was entitled \"FOILED\". In addition the Shelburne Museum in Vermont hosted a special exhibit of tinsel paintings several years ago entitled \"All that Glitters\". These are very collectibleearly American art forms.
