One of the world’sgreat works of literature in its first single and original binding, as issued by Parisian publisher Hetzel\'s Biblioteque D’Education et de Recreation, as part of the Voyage Extraordinaires (VE) series.

This extremely rare 1st single-bindingwas issued on16th November 1871, being thetrue illustrated 1st edition/1st impressionof Jules Verne’s Vingt Mille Lieues Sous Les Mers,or 20,000 Leagues Under The Seas (note the plural). An estimated 300 copies were issued in various formats for the French market during Nov 1871. As with many of Hetzel’s first publications of Verne’s works, this book does not state year of publication on the title page, yet it does contain the printed proof variants of the first impression/printing– all of whichwill be made known to the buyer upon purchase,though much of the evidence can be seenin the photographs provided here. This book contains6identified first impression markers, the mostrenowned of which is \"Champignons\" (\"Mushrooms\") at bottom of p121 (see photo), which is only ever seen in the first impression as thiswas changed a month later for the 2nd impression.Hetzel\'s next issue of the novel was in 1872, beingthe 2nd Edition,by which timemany of the earlier errors had been corrected.

No other copies of this 1st impression appear in British libraries, nor is thereany other copy for sale online.

Hetzel’s original complete first publication of the fully illustrated double volume, the first printing of both Voyage Extraordinaires volumes, both parts making up the whole story of Vingt Mille Lieues Sous Les Mers. The spine is dark green leather bound, with hard board covers decoratedin soft pebble-grained pattern. Gilt titles and decorations to spine, panels divided by thin gilt triple-bands. Exterior has light surface wear to leather spine (see photo) but interior in exceptional condition, clear pages throughout, virtually no foxing. This copyhas withstood the test of time rather better than other examples from the period, showing very little usage wear internally.

The very last page, with TABLE DES MATIERES doeshave light spot-foxing, as does the half-title page at the fore. There are no ink inscriptions or notes. Book is in original binding and in good order all round, with near fine sheets within, a first impression very well-preserved.

The buyer will be provided with a full and complete list of the first issue points contained upon purchase of this book. Thefirst issue points (some are errors) in this bookfully verify itas the true first impression (or printing) of November 1871,that is guaranteed. Provision of a full list of first impression issue markers willkeepthis book\'shistorical knowledge intact, its unique & remarkable printed content thus being recorded. Enough evidence has been put before you toestablish this as firstimpression, if you know what you are looking for - actually the title page also contains a marker that is only seen in the 1st impression. Acopy of this edition appearedforsalein 2010 in Paris which sold for EUR 8000, although it was not in as good condition as the one on offer here.

The book contains: 111 illustrations by Edouard Riou and Alphonse de Neuville. Engravings by Hildibrand. Printed by Jules Bonaventure of Paris (later editions were printed by Gauthier-Villars). Half-title page; illustrated title page; copyright / title page, all pages present and intact. Light spot foxing to end two pages only. No pages torn or turned at corners. No inscriptions or ink or pencil marks. Not ex-library. No tears (though blank front end paperhas small nick to edge). The photos show the book is presentable externally, with justlight surface wearto the spine. The gilt titles are in good order.

The followingtwo 1st impression print markers are noted:-

  • p33 below pic legend closed with square bracket ] instead of );
  • p121 below picture has “Champignons” while all later prints show “Paysage sous-marin de l’isle Crespo.”, this being the most important first issue marker;

The buyer will be provided with a full and complete list of 1st impression markers in this book, which are many.
