Publisher\'s Note: BEYOND MARS takes place 200 years in the future, when a new force—paragravity—has enabled men to live and breathe on asteroids. The strip stars Mike Flint, a spatial engineer who lives on Brooklyn Rock, an asteroid “beyond Mars.” With Sam, his green-skinned metallic partner from Venus, Flint gets involved in a series of lighthearted adventures, battling space pirates, teaming up with beautiful and strong-minded women, and dealing with addicts of the mysterious drug called “star dust.”

The restored color is outstanding and the artwork is creative and imaginative. Bruce Canwell contributes a wonderful introduction, putting this in the context of early 1950s science fiction. This also includes original art by Lee Elias on other features like Black Cat, Terry & the Pirates and Tommy Tomorrow.

And Editor Dean Mullaney of IDW / Library of America Comics has been nominated for an Eisner Award for his assemblage of this vintage 1950s Sunday newspaper strip!

**SPECIAL SIGNED EDITION: This is book is an essential addition to your library, but the first installment (February 17, 1952) of the strip was unintentionally left out. By special arrangement with the publisher, we have secured copies of BEYOND MARS with this missing page! Even better, this missing page will be AUTOGRAPHED by Editor Dean Mullaney and Introducer Bruce Canwell on the verso! This exclusive will then be numbered and laid into your new finished copy.

From Wikipedia: Beyond Mars was a science fiction comic strip written by Jack Williamson and drawn by Lee Elias. The Sunday strip ran in New York\'s Daily News from February 17, 1952 to May 13, 1955, initially as a full tabloid page and, near the end, as a half tab. It is set in the same universe as the Williamson novels Seetee Ship and Seetee Shock.

The creation of Beyond Mars happened in an unusual way—because of a bad review. The New York Times reviewed a Williamson novel, stating that his writing \"ranks only slightly above that of comic strip adventures.\" The review was read by Daily News editor Ana Barker who immediately contacted Williamson, hired him to script a similar comic strip and teamed him with illustrator Elias.

The storyline was loosely based on Seetee Ship. Headquartered on Brooklyn Rock, in the new frontier of the asteroid belt during the year 2191, freelance pilot Mike Flint steered his antimatter-powered craft across the universe by counteracting the pull of gravity on other solar systems. Although Flint held a license as a spacial engineer, he became more of an outer space policeman, often getting an assist from several alien sidekicks. Comics historian Dave Karlen reviewed:

In 1952 the New York News wanted to celebrate their success from a steady increase in newspaper circulation and decided an exclusive feature created for their publication would be just the ticket... It is said Chester Gould suggested many of the story lines and helped Williamson from time to time on a proper way to present a comic strip plot. This colorful space-opera drama with a stellar Dick Tracy feel was beautifully rendered in the \"Noel Sickles School\" by Elias with its amazingly detailed exotic locals, amusing alien creatures, beautiful women and lots of two-fisted action. But as with many strips over time, the New York News believed their creation did not live up to its expectations and cut the size to a half-page in late 1954, which probably contributed to its untimely demise on March 13, 1955 as the creative team wrapped up some final loose ends in the last Sunday.

              A Note On Customs:

When customs forms are required for a shipment, we fill them out honestly, stating that the contents are merchandise and giving the price you paid for the item (not including the shipping) as the value. Please do not ask us to do otherwise. Take any customs duty that you will have to pay into consideration before making your purchase.

Please note that many countries have restrictions on the import of certain goods and sometimes on the maximum value that can be shipped to the country by various shipping methods. Priority Mail International insurance cannot be purchased for all countries and some limit the amount of insurance that can be purchased (default indemnity coverage seems to apply to all countries). Details on shipping conditions by country can be found on the United States Post Office web site.

              Shipping History:

We have shipped well over 6,000 packages (containing more than 10,000 items), with more than 1000 of those packages going to international destinations, since we started selling in 2002. We have not had a report of a book damaged in transit since shortly after we started selling (it took us a couple of damaged shipments to learn how to package books properly to be sure they wouldn\'t get damaged). In the first years, our exprience was that the post office would lose a package about every one to two years. Then the post office put better tracking measures in place and it has been well over 10 years since a customer has reported a lost shipment (packages do still occasionally get sorted incorrectly, delaying delivery but that is fairly rare).

              Sales Tax

Beginning January 1, 2019, will start collecting sales tax on items being purchased for shipment to states that have passed legislation requiring that sales tax be collected on items being sold for shipment to their state. This is being done by , I have no control over it. At the present time, I will still be responsible for collecting California Sales tax on items shipped to a California address.

Unless you are a reseller with a valid California Seller\'s Permit buying this item to resell, we are required by California law to collect sales tax for all items shipped to or delivered to addresses in California or picked up from our location.

The checkout system cannot handle the complexities of sales tax in California where the sales tax rate varies by where the item is being delivered. We have setup the shipping calculator to charge sales tax at 9.00% for those who do not want to wait for us to invoice you. If you wait for our invoice, we will adjust the sales tax to be correct for the location you say we will be shipping to.

California resellers need to provide us with your permit number before we can remove the sales tax from your invoice.
