Ada Galsworthy: The Dear Dogs – SIGNED & INSCRIBED by the Author + 2 hand written poems by John Galsworthy.

First Edition Hardback published by William Heinemann in 1935. The book is in Near Fine condition without a Dust-Jacket. The only mark or inscription is that by the author on the front fep which reads: “Dorothy Holman from Ada Galsworthy. In memory of Dartmoor days. March 1938”. The pages are bright and tightly bound with a little foxing. The covers are in very good condition with a little shelf wear and a faded spine. There is a black and white photograph of one of the couple’s dogs on the front cover. Of particular interest are the two sheets of paper from The Dorchester Hotel, Daddyhole Plain, Torquay upon which are written two of John Galsworthy’s poems. These are “Beauty” which has “J Galsworthy” written at the top and “Dedication”. Beauty has a correction with the word “thing” crossed out on the first line and replaced with “rule” which is how it appeared when published. It also spells “fantasy” rather than the published version which has “phantasy”. Dedication is also hand written on the back of a sheet of paper from the same hotel. The writing is a match for the inscription written in the book so these poems have been written by Ada, John Galsworthy’s wife. Either, she was trying to write out the poems, although it’s difficult to fathom for what reason, or these represent the very first transcriptions of these poems, being written by Ada as John Galsworthy dictated them. Either way, this makes for a very exciting and unique addition to any Galsworthy fan’s collection!
